Morrisville Academy Donates $5,500 To Local Pediatric Family Support Program
Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Morrisville Donates Gift Cards to the Duke Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Family Support Program
DULUTH, Ga. - Dec. 4, 2015 // PRNewswire // - Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy, a national early childhood education franchise with three decades of experience, is proud to announce its Morrisville learning academy has donated $5,500 in gift cards to the Duke Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant (PBMT) Family Support Program. The Duke PBMT Family Support Program has been a beneficiary of Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Morrisville since 2011 through the school's annual Fall Festival and the Rainbow of Heroes Walk in Durham, N.C.
Each year, the Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Morrisville holds an annual fall festival, which includes a raffle benefitting the PBMT Family Support Program. Raffle tickets are purchased for a donation of one dollar, and participants are entered to win a variety of prizes ranging from gift cards to local retailers to a free week of childcare. The money raised from the raffle is used to purchase gift cards for grocery stores, gas stations and local retailers, which are in turn used by families of the Duke PBMT Family Support Program.
"The impact of the gift cards cannot be overstated, as it means groceries for a week that a family doesn't have to find money to get, a toiletry item or piece of clothing for summer or winter that can be purchased without worrying about if they will have enough to cover bills at home or from the hospital, or a tank of gas to help with getting the family back and forth from their apartment or room at the Ronald McDonald House to the hospital," said Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Morrisville franchisee Van Hogan. "At Kids 'R' Kids, we teach children at a young age to look for ways in their lives to help others around them and make it a part of our delivery of excellent childcare."
In addition to giving money, the Kids 'R' Kids of Morrisville staff has volunteered and participated in Rainbow of Heroes Walk for the last four years. The Rainbow of Heroes Walk takes place each May in Durham, N.C. and serves as a fundraiser for the Family Support Program. More importantly, the annual walk serves as a reunion for the staff, patients, families and supporters of the Duke PBMT Family Support Program. More than 800 people gather each year to celebrate the patients who are cared for through the program.
"In being a part of the Walk, the staff at Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Morrisville have shown not just their willingness to give of their talents or resources, but most importantly, to give of their hearts as they demonstrate their support for families going through a tremendously difficult time through their presence," said Scott Mofield, Director of the Duke PBMT Family Support Program. "We are extremely grateful for the institutional importance that Kids R Kids of Morrisville has felt in being an active participant in the community around them, and we know that the children whose care they provide will only grow stronger and better from being in such an environment."
With a nationally awarded curriculum, Kids 'R' Kids of Morrisville provides early education and care for children from six weeks through 12 years of age. Programs offered to children include infant care, toddler and preschool care, private pre-K and kindergarten, before-and-afterschool care and summer camp. In order to provide even more convenience for families with busy schedules, Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy in Morrisville remains open during all major school breaks and holidays year-round. Kids 'R' Kids was the first preschool accredited by AdvancED in America, the world's largest education community. This accreditation ensures its schools are meeting and exceeding the highest accreditation standards and providing excellence in education beyond most daycare and childcare providers.
The Duke PBMT Family Support Program provides over 25 programs, including patient activities, incentive programs, volunteers, parent support and financial assistance to help lighten the burden for families whose patients are receiving stem cell or bone marrow transplants at Duke. The situation families find themselves in is stressful at its core, as all of the patients who are treated are terminally ill, and many have no other viable options for treatment. The process of getting this type of transplant typically relocates families to Durham for 4-6 months, as patients are hospitalized for an average of 55 days and must be heavily isolated both during their inpatient and outpatient care. The Duke PBMT Family Support Program tries to provide some sense of normalcy for families who are in extremely stressful circumstances. The program receives no funds from the Duke Health System or Duke Medical Center, and relies solely on philanthropic contributions.
