Woodworking Heritage and Passion for Design
Jory Brigham grew up among generations of woodworkers and craftsmen, discovering at an early age his own creative voice. In a media interview, Jory was asked if he knew early on furnituremaking would be a full time job or just a hobby. He said he hadn’t given much thought to it as a career. “It was the designing that got my attention. I had always done the building as a ‘job’ for my dad or uncle. Building other people’s designs is completely boring to me, and of course very limiting. As soon as I designed and built my own piece everything changed.”
“For me, woodworking has turned into a career, not because I was pushing, not because I wanted to make money, but really I just fell into it because of all the things that I love to do,” Jory said in a Woodcraft interview. “ I did the best I could, not for any reason other than excitement. I became passionate about it.”
Since 2008, Jory has designed and built custom furniture for his own company, Jory Brigham Designs, and also offers the classes that are part of the “California Dreamin’ Sweepstakes.” His work earned national attention twice in 2015, first when he won Spike TV’s “Framework” competition that involved several episodes of intense furniture building, and in December when he won a Best of Year Award in Interior Design’s 2015 competition for his Mackenrow Tennis Table that placed first in the Accessory Category.
“Woodcraft considers the ‘California Dreamin’ Sweepstakes’ a tremendous opportunity for the winner to improve his or her furniture building skills and learn a lot in general about woodworking,” Vince Grlovich, Woodcraft vice president for sales and marketing, said. “Jory Brigham is a talented designer and builder and an asset to Woodcraft’s educational resources.”
