November 04, 2016 // Franchising.com // Lake Placid, NY. – Anytime Fitness, the world’s largest and fastest-growing fitness franchise, honored Andy Gundlach as its “Club Operator of the Year” at the company’s annual conference in Lake Placid, NY last weekend. Gundlach, who owns 29 Anytime Fitness gyms in the Madison, WI area (his 30th gym is set to open next month in Evansville, WI), will celebrate his 10th anniversary with Anytime Fitness October 1st. This is the third time in the past six years that Gundlach has been honored as the company’s #1 franchisee.
“We’re incredibly proud of what Andy has done to help improve the lives of more than 30,000 people in the communities served by his gyms,” said Dave Mortensen, president and co-founder of Anytime Fitness. “His staff genuinely cares about their members. It’s no wonder that so many of them make significant strides towards achieving their fitness goals, shortly after joining one of Andy’s gyms.”
Ironically, Gundlach’s first franchising experience was in the pizza business – an industry not exactly known for its health benefits. But, even while working as a regional director of operations for Pizza Hut, Gundlach says he loved working out. And the moment he first walked into an Anytime Fitness gym, in 2005, he knew it was time for a major life change.
“My jaw literally dropped,” Gundlach said about his first exposure to Anytime Fitness. “The club was beautiful and loaded with great equipment. I’d read somewhere that the company was projected to begin growing very rapidly, so I made a call to the company that same day.”
About a year later, Gundlach opened his first Anytime Fitness gym in southern Wisconsin. Now, he oversees a $15 million regional empire of fitness clubs.
“Andy’s been extraordinarily successful because he not only responds to trends in the fitness industry, he anticipates them,” said Chuck Runyon, CEO and co-founder of Anytime Fitness. “Today’s fitness consumers demand significant value for their investment and that means they expect real results: better fitness and improved health. Andy’s decision to employ a great team of personal trainers at each of his gyms has led to increased customer satisfaction, improved retention levels and significant increases in revenue.”
Runyon also praised Gundlach for being a “team player,” generous with his time and eager to share his knowledge and experience with new franchisees.
In response to winning the Anytime Fitness “Club Operator of the Year” award, Gundlach said, “Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always wanted to run my own business. But even more important to me now is having a measurable impact on the health of as many people as possible. I was born and raised in the Madison area, and I see so many health problems caused by obesity and inactivity. Our goal every day is to help people lead healthy, happier, more active lives.”
