MANDEVILLE, La. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - December 16, 2016 - In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans-area mom Renee Maloney teamed up with a friend hoping to help their neighbors forget about the storm’s devastation. Their idea was to turn everyone into an artist by providing them a blank canvas, step-by-step art instruction and a glass of wine. Painting with a Twist, born in 2007, has since become the original and fastest-growing paint-and-sip franchise in the nation. Maloney will take a look inside the business on “Undercover Boss,” Wednesday, Jan. 4 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
“The experience of going undercover was incredibly rewarding for me because I was able to feel the pulse of our entire company. It was a reminder that our customers, artists and franchisees are all part of the powerful Painting with a Twist experience. Inside each and every studio is where the magic happens and I’m grateful I could experience it from a different perspective,” said Maloney, Co-Founder and CFO of Painting with a Twist. “Connecting with everyone face-to-face is what drives this business. And that’s something I can’t measure from behind my desk.”
On the episode, Maloney worked as an art instructor, studio manager, warehouse supervisor and franchisee. Maloney was excited to see how passionate employees within the company are when it comes to making the customer experience memorable – from quality control of canvases in their own warehouse to greeting guests at the door when it’s their time to paint. Throughout the journey, she gets a first-hand look at the personal and professional struggles of franchisees and their employees.
As a result of her findings while on her “Undercover Boss” mission, Maloney has since implemented an Artist Advisory Board for the company, which helps to acknowledge and compensate artists for work they have created and is taught nationwide.
“Undercover Boss,” in its eighth season, is a two-time Emmy Award-winning reality series that follows high-level executives as they slip anonymously into the rank-and-file of their own organizations. Each week, a different leader will sacrifice the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their operation.
Led by local art instructors, Painting with a Twist guests paint on bare canvases using paint and brushes provided by the studio. The 8,000 piece library of original artwork ranges from landscapes, abstracts and cityscapes, to creative renderings of animals, iconic buildings and florals. The company’s charitable arm, Painting with a Purpose, raises money for local charities through monthly events at all locations. To date, more than $3.25 million has been raised. The company opened more than 60 new franchise locations throughout 2016.
