Humility Remains Jack Butorac’s Secret Ingredient For Success

Marco’s Pizza CEO Credits Toledo Team, Customers For National Operator Of The Year Honor

October 03, 2017 // Franchising.com // It’s not often that you hear the words “humility” and “CEO” in the same sentence, unless it’s a punchline. CEO of Toledo-based Marco’s Pizza, Jack Butorac, is proving that being an exception to that notion is a recipe for success. Butorac’s team-oriented leadership style is championed within the Marco’s corporate offices and with our franchise partners across America. On October 2 his efforts were celebrated by the restaurant industry at large, when he was named the Operator Of The Year winner at the Multi-Unit Foodservice Operators (MUFSO) gala.

The award celebrates the restaurant executive who best represents outstanding leadership, strong company performance and careers dominated by success and giving back to the industry and their community.

Operator Of The Year is one of the industry’s highest honors and earning the award is equal parts validating and elusive because winning requires both business savvy and the respect of industry peers.

Before a CEO can even be considered for Operator Of The Year, they must first be named a Golden Chain Honoree by The Nation’s Restaurant News Editorial Board, an award that honors the country’s foodservice CEO’s achievements in overall business performance. Only after receiving this recognition from foodservice critics can they be named Operator of the year, a distinction determined by peer voting.

Given the stringent requirements to win Operator Of The Year, it’s clear why the award is coveted by the industry’s top CEOs. This year, Butorac’s competition included CEOs from other foodservice franchise juggernauts from the likes of The Cheesecake Factory, Shake Shack and Dave and Busters.

Despite being recognized with this prestigious award, a distinction that most foodservice CEOs strive for but rarely achieve, Butorac maintained his signature cool and was proud to credit everyone involved with the efforts to propel Marco’s into one of America’s fastest growing franchises.

“Being chosen as a Golden Chain Award recipient among some great industry leaders who have inspired me was an incredible honor in its own right and I am grateful beyond words for being named Operator Of The Year. It’s humbling to reflect on the accomplishments with all the brands I’ve been involved with and know they were truly team efforts,” says Butorac. “At Marco’s, the credit goes to our founder Pat Giammarco, who had the original vision to bring authentic Italian pizza to the United States.

The success and growth of the brand is a collective effort of our incredible executive leadership team headed by President Bryon Stephens, our committed corporate staff, all of our franchisees and employees at the store level who deliver on our brand promise each and every day. Of course, none of our efforts would amount to anything without our customers, who embrace and share our passion for pizza. I speak for the entire organization when I say that nothing makes us more proud than serving them everyday.”

2017 has been another banner year for the Marco’s Pizza franchise and the success is evident in both franchise growth statistics (increased sales by 17.1% and projected to reach 1,000 franchise locations in 2018) and consumer preference (named 2017 “America’s Favorite Pizza” by MarketForce over the likes of Pizza Hut, Domino’s and Papa John’s) and while this caliber of success may be surprising to some, Butorac recognized the potential for success over a decade ago.

Butorac first purchased the franchise rights to Marco’s in 2004 when it became apparent that the franchise shared his commitment and passion to quality.

“I felt pizza lovers across the country deserved something better than the seemingly ubiquitous run-of-the-mill options available and I knew Marco’s Pizza was the upper-tier quality option that the market was missing.”

Under Butorac’s leadership the franchise is poised to expand its commitment to deliver quality pizza across America into 2018 and beyond.
