The Malawi's "Journey to a Million Meals" announced today that it has donated 985,237 meals. Company officials expect one of their franchises in Virginia, Utah and Texas to ring up the 1 millionth sale within a few weeks.
"We are watching our sales numbers closely and getting ready to celebrate this key milestone in all of our restaurants," said Malawi's Co-Founder Blake Roney. "Hitting the 1 million mark is about more than just sales. It means that 1 million meals were served to kids and their families in Malawi, and that the unique business model we developed around the core philosophy of giving back is resonating."
Roney partnered with Chef Kent Andersen to develop the restaurant and its trademark Meal-for-Meal Exchange Program after doing a humanitarian trip to Malawi. The southeast African country is one of the poorest and least developed nations in the world.
Under this program, the company delivers nutrient-dense meals to children and their families in Malawi. The company buys local maize that is then blended with vitamins and nutrients and delivered to villages throughout the country.
Studies have shown that consumers are increasingly seeking out brands that support a good cause. And while many businesses today are involved in philanthropic efforts and partnerships, Malawi's was developed specifically around the meal giveback program. Each of its franchises also partners with a local hunger-fighting charity.
