Gold’s Gym to Open New Location in Middletown, N.Y.

Area entrepreneurs become multi-unit franchise owners with their second Gold’s Gym location.

March 20, 2018 // Franchising.com // DALLAS - Gold’s Gym Franchising LLC is doubling its fitness power in Orange County, New York, with construction of a new Gold’s Gym set to begin in late spring at the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, N.Y.

The new location at 1 Galleria Drive will be a 52,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility occupying the former Sears department store at the mall. It will be owned and operated by Don and Tammy Murphy, local husband and wife entrepreneurs adding a second location to their family’s long-held association with Gold’s Gym.

The investment comes following the enormous growth and popularity of Gold’s Gym at 15 Racquet Rd. in Newburgh, N.Y. That location, which Don Murphy operates with his mother, Mary Murphy, recently underwent a multi-million-dollar renovation that led to a 50 percent increase in the number of members. The updates were so well-received that the location earned the Best Improved Gym Award and the Best Group Exercise Program in North America last year for the global franchise brand.

“We studied all the best practices when we renovated the Newburgh location, and we are bringing the latest and greatest features to Middletown too,” said Don Murphy. With a goal to be inclusive, serve more people, meet growing demand, and transform lives, he added that members will have access to a membership that enables them to use both locations, with both gyms offering the best in equipment, amenities, and fitness and nutrition programs.

Tammy Murphy, who traded a life in finance in New York to became a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN) Practitioner and NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer and nutrition coach, has already elevated the nutrition program for members at Newburgh and will do the same at the Galleria location. The Gold’s Gym at the Galleria will also be the fourth location of any gym in the United States to include Les Mills – THE TRIP, an immersive studio group cycling experience.

Like Mother, Like Son:

Don Murphy explains that being a veteran of mega-gyms with this multi-million-dollar-enterprise is a family affair at heart that is dedicated to helping the community with an unmatched health and fitness destination, the likes of which has not been seen before.

“I was a senior in high school when mom bought the first gym in 1986,” he said. She converted it to a Gold’s Gym franchise in 1989, and his passion to help others grew year after year from there.

“Fitness, health, community and well-being…it’s all in my blood. It’s my DNA,” Murphy said. “I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else with my life. We continue to be progressive. Our goal is to not only serve the 20 percent of people who currently frequent the gym, but the 80 percent who don’t. Meeting their needs and goals will be one of our priorities.”

“I’ve never felt so good about the Gold’s Gym brand as I do now,” he added.
