How A Whole Community Changed This Family’s Plight Into A Gratitude Experience

June 14, 2018 // Franchising.com // Jacksonville, Fla .- As Vice President of Training for Jacksonville based Paul Davis Restoration Inc., a franchise network focused on property damage recovery and restoration, Leslie Anderson has dealt with disaster, despair, destruction, and even death in every form – some of it utterly unimaginable while doing her job. She credits this experience, and a very supportive employer, for helping her manage her own family crisis.

Anderson’s training; knowledge and response expertise was recently tested in her own family. Her husband Dan is a patient at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. after being diagnosed with early colon cancer. He underwent a total colectomy in his battle to fight the aggressive disease. During his recuperation period, the Anderson’s son Knowlton graduated from the prestigious Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville as a top fine arts student and delivered the valedictorian speech which focused on youth, perseverance and bravery.

Since Dan could not leave the hospital, Mayo Clinic pulled in its IT team to develop a highly specialized phone app for Leslie to transmit the graduation event and live stream the broadcast into Dan’s hospital room. The exceptional effort at Mayo supported the Andersons and allowed Dan to also see Knowlton’s high school principal who gave the graduate accolades for Knowlton’s nearly 5.0 GPA and his heartfelt valedictorian message.

Additionally, while Leslie was leaving Dan’s bedside after his surgery at Mayo Clinic, she faced another enormous challenge. With only a few minutes to locate a nearby pharmacy to fill several vital prescriptions for Dan when he came home, Leslie located the Publix Supermarket pharmacy on Hodges Blvd. in Jacksonville. The pharmacy was about to close for the day, but pharmacists stayed open that night to fill the prescriptions and explain the intricacies of the medications to Leslie. The above-and-beyond efforts that Leslie and her family experienced during this time is a testament to many caring individuals in Jacksonville who helped Dan in his cancer recovery. Dan is now at home and doing well with Leslie’s determination and willpower.

Paul Davis Restoration’s parent company, FirstService Brands has established the FirstService Relief Fund for employees of all of their brands to receive relief due to disasters, family illnesses or injuries, and much more. Employees can also donate into the Fund to give back to coworkers. Dan’s company Commvault also contributed to Dan’s recovery and comfort with time off and offers to provide necessary services for the family.

“My family and I are so very grateful to Paul Davis, the Mayo Clinic, Publix and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, and Commvault. All of the people who have helped us and continue to assist our family are angels on earth,” said Leslie Anderson. “We are just one story, but it is our family and this means so much to us,” she said.
