Metal Supermarkets Celebrates National Welding Month

Month Recognizes Critical Role of Welding and the Need for Skilled Workers

April 16, 2019 // Franchising.com // Mississauga, Ontario - Metal Supermarkets, the world’s largest supplier of small-quantity metals, is celebrating National Welding Month in April by recognizing the impact welding has on the everyday lives of people throughout North America.

National Welding Month raises awareness of the many ways welding plays a critical role in society today. Started thousands of years ago, welding is the joining of two or more materials through heat and pressure, forming a bond between two pieces of metal or plastic. Today there are more than 80 distinct welding processes used to build large structures such as ships, automobiles and planes and in the manufacturing of electronic devices, medical equipment and many other products.

Metal Supermarkets offers a wide variety of metal materials to manufacturers, fabricators, hobbyists and do-it-yourself home repair customers through more than 90 bricks-and-mortar locations across North America and online through their eCommerce website. Many of Its customers depend upon Metal Supermarkets to acquire the metal they need to weld these materials to build, create or repair a diverse set of metal items and structures each day. Metal Supermarkets plays a vital role in helping supply skilled workers with the metal products they need to effectively run their business as well as providing individual customers the resources required to complete their hobby or repair projects.

An important message of National Welding Month is promoting the value of welding and skilled trades and to help advance careers in the field. This comes at a critical time in which there is a lack of skilled tradespeople, as the American Welding Society has predicted a shortage of more than 450,000 skilled welding professionals by 2022. Many welders are highly skilled problem solvers who work in the automotive, electronics, construction and manufacturing industries. A welding career can offer professional stability and an annual median salary that is nearly $3,000 more per year than that of other fields, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Many Metal Supermarkets stores partner with local trade schools or community colleges that have welding or other skilled trade programs. Stores provide the institutions with metal materials and donate excess supplies and equipment to help educate students in these programs. Metal Supermarkets franchisees often hire local students in part-time roles to teach young people about the field and serve as mentors for the next generation of welders.

Stephen Schober, President and CEO of Metal Supermarkets, said this is part of the company’s ongoing mission to fuel the success of skilled trade workers everywhere.

“Our Metal Supermarkets locations across North America have strong relationships with local welders,” said Schober. “We are proud to play a vital role in the welding industry by suppling our customers with precision-cut, small-quantity metals to meet their specific project needs. Metal Supermarkets is also dedicated to helping advance educational and professional opportunities for people interested in a career in welding or a skilled trade. April is an excellent time to recognize the importance welding has in so many areas of our lives.”
