Holistic Orthopedic Wellness Brand Names James Smith, CMB President to Lead Nationwide Franchise Growth

July 11, 2019 // Franchising.com // HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Structural Elements®, also referred to as (se) ®, an orthopedic wellness brand that provides the highest standard of care through a contemporary business model and a proprietary treatment approach, has named James Smith, CMB as its President.

Smith, who is a marathon/ultra marathon enthusiast, 7th degree Black Belt in Taekwon-Do, and ultra duathlon world record holder, with an impressive entrepreneurial business background, will work closely alongside his longtime friend and the brand’s founder and CEO, Doug Bertram, to bolster the company’s development initiatives. The leadership move comes as Structural Elements® recently launched an aggressive Network Growth Model strategically designed to create opportunities for individuals interested in clinic ownership or therapy practice to join the (se)® franchise system.

“Doug’s holistic treatment approach and innovative business model has intrigued me since day one,” said Smith. “With the company’s growth plans in place, we have an incredible opportunity to take Structural Elements® to the next level. I’m thrilled to join the brand during such a pivotal moment and work in tandem to further solidify our presence in the health and wellness industry.”

Prior to joining Structural Elements®, Smith was the CEO of The Z Group, LLC, which catered to the endurance sports industry. Drawing from diverse backgrounds in financial solutions, model building, operations, structured finance, medical, performance coaching and endurance running, The Z Group was created to meet the needs of the rapidly changing finance and endurance sports fields.

Outside of The Z Group, Smith was the president and co-founder of Urban Lending Solutions LLC, where he grew the company from a startup of three people to 2,400 employees and the largest minority-owned mortgage financial services company in the United States. Additionally, he was president of Computershare Property Solutions LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Computershare Inc.—a publicly traded, $10 billion holding company operating in 22 countries.

“James adopted the Structural Elements® concept early on, and we’re honored to welcome him on board for our next growth phase,” said Bertram. “His charismatic energy and enthusiasm for fitness is motivational, but his business knowledge will be instrumental for our success. We’re confident his vision for Structural Elements® aligns perfectly with our goals, and we’re looking forward to building upon this partnership for years to come.”

(se)® refers to the proprietary approach Bertram developed as an acupuncturist. Operating on the fundamental belief that the body is a single unit, Bertram developed a mapping technique locating patterns of focal adhesions in response to mechanical stress.

Committed to bringing this treatment to more communities, the brand’s new Network Growth Model, which offers four paths, supports the growth and development of independent but interconnected specialists and investors to deliver a high impact patient experience and high growth financial opportunity. The four paths include Regional Developer, Clinic Franchise, Micro Franchisee and Area Representative.

Structural Elements® currently has three clinics open and operating (Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland and Milwaukee, Wisconsin). The Milwaukee clinic, which is owned by Area Representative Luke Laga, welcomed in three Micro Franchisees in the last few months.

Structural Elements® operates on a cash-based model, as this approach does not limit therapists to treating just the site of acute pain, but rather treat the whole patient.
