Franchising’s “One-Stop-Shop” For All Things LEGO®, Bricks & Minifigs Looks to Further Expand with New Ownership

October 22, 2019 // Franchising.com // Orem, UT - With the more than $16 billion dollar toy industry continuing to flourish with new avenues for growth, one company, Bricks & Minifigs, is continuing to establish itself as the one-stop-shop for all things LEGO®.

Touted as one of the nation’s top destinations for LEGO® products, Bricks & Minifigs currently has 38 stores open and operating in 19 states and one unit in Canada. Looking ahead, the company expects to open 8-12 new stores each year, and is hoping to grow primarily through multi-unit operators.

“LEGO® is an enduring brand and continues to spark the imagination of kids all over the world,” said Bricks & Minifigs CEO Ammon McNeff, noting that the in-person shopping experience is a key component for customers. “As much as the retail market is changing, our guests are looking for a true experience. Whether it is a family bringing in their LEGO®-obsessed kids to buy the set they’ve been hoping for or a customer searching for that one piece to complete a project, we serve them all with enthusiasm and support. We’re excited about this time of expansion as we look forward to bringing our one-of-a-kind stores to more communities.”

The concept of Bricks & Minifigs originated with original founders John Masek and David Oritz. The duo met through the LEGO® resale community in Portland in 2003. They started as competitors both looking to purchase a large quantity of vintage LEGOs®, but soon realized if they combined their skill sets, they would make a great team. Using Ortiz’s contacts in the LEGO® community and Masek’s retail experience, they opened their first Bricks & Minifigs location in 2009 in Battleground, Washington as co-founders. The location was so successful, they decided to open a second location in Canby, Oregon in 2010, which became the flagship store.

The current owner, Ammon McNeff learned about the brand at Salt Lake City’s Comic Convention where he and his brother, Matt, were selling their own handmade collector’s items. The brothers were already successful business owners and were always looking for new opportunities to invest. They were intrigued by Bricks & Minifigs, and within three months of learning about the brand, they bought a franchise in Orem, Utah, which opened in May 2017. The brothers impressed the then-owners, Ortiz and Masek, with their extensive knowledge of the company and passion for the mission so much so, a year later they offered Ammon and Matt the opportunity to buy the company.

What sets Bricks & Minifigs apart from others in the industry is their signature buy, sell, trade model. This allows guests to buy new and used LEGO® products while providing the option to sell and trade in old or unused sets. Enthusiasts can also search through individual minifigs, bulk bricks, components and accessories to complete any LEGO® set with a few missing pieces.

“Our goal is to create the ideal LEGO® shopping experience for our customers,” McNeff added. We pride ourselves in giving our guests access to any product they’re looking for, from the smallest minifigs to the largest sets, and that’s what keeps them coming back. The variety and quality of our products and the high level of customer service and expertise.”

To augment the company’s growth, Bricks & Minifigs is seeking single-unit franchise partners with an enthusiasm for creating a family-friendly environment and a passion for customer service. Including a franchise fee of $25,000 US/$30,000 CAN, the estimated total investment to open a Bricks & Minifigs is $108,000 - $276,400.
