Sylvan Learning Grows Its Footprint in Calgary, Alberta

September 06, 2023 // Franchising.com // BALTIMORE - Sylvan Learning awarded a territory in Calgary, Alberta to Fauzia Akhter, growing the company’s accessibility in the area to meet an increasing demand for educational support.

Akhter has her Bachelor of Education and is a science educator with decades of experience teaching at the middle and high school level. Outside of the traditional school system, she was on the science faculty at the New York Military Academy, NY and taught part time at another Sylvan in Calgary, AB.

She immigrated from Bangladesh to Canada before obtaining her Master of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Toronto, and Ontario College Diploma of Environmental Technician Sampling and Monitoring from Seneca College, in Toronto.

“It’s a dream to open a business where I can share my passion for education with others,” said Akhter. “There is a huge learning gap, and most students won’t fully recover without supplemental support. My goal is to inspire students to love learning and witness the success I know they can achieve.”

As a part-time Sylvan teacher, Akhter was already familiar and fond of Sylvan before committing to a center of her own. She said, “I’m an educator, so I know the value in Sylvan’s technology-based lesson plans. By taking the diagnostic assessment exam, we’re able to meet each student where they are and create individualized lesson plans essentially with a tap of a button. It saves us time and ultimately maximizes the students’ time at our center.”
