Newest Wild Birds Unlimited Location Now Open in Columbia, Maryland

June 21, 2024 // Franchising.com // Columbia, Md. – Wild Birds Unlimited is excited to announce the opening of its newest franchise store at 6955 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia, Maryland. This new location, southwest of Baltimore, has been converted from a local nature establishment and is now providing customers in the area with Wild Birds Unlimited’s offerings.

Co-owners Brian Lockwood and Mary-Lynn Ragot, who have successfully run the Timonium, Maryland location since 2021, spearheaded this latest venture. “Taking over a store that was already a part of the community was important to us. We’ve kept the staff and are transforming the space while maintaining that connection to the community and the high standards of Wild Birds Unlimited,” said Brian.

The decision to purchase and convert the former nature store into a Wild Birds Unlimited franchise came after the previous owners approached Brian and Mary-Lynn, proposing the sale. “It was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” commented Brian. “We know the success of the Wild Birds Unlimited brand, so the conversion made sense. We’ve been able to build a customer base through our loyalty program and become the go-to spot for birders looking for advice and information.”

Paul Pickett, CDO/EVP of Franchising at Wild Birds Unlimited, expressed enthusiasm for the new location: “Brian and Mary-Lynn have shown exceptional dedication and understanding of what Wild Birds Unlimited stands for. Their ability to integrate into and uplift the community while following our successful franchise model is exactly what we look for in our franchisees.”

The store conversion is still a work in progress. Wild Birds Unlimited in Columbia aims to be more than just a store; it's about creating experiences and fostering a love for nature. “I tell people I’m in the business of putting smiles on people’s faces,” said Brian. “When your customers share their joy of watching a hummingbird hover over a feeder, or you help a customer set up a bird-friendly backyard, the joy it brings is immeasurable.”

Reflecting on his personal journey and the lifestyle shift that the franchise has offered, Brian shared, “I’ve always been a birder, but now I have the chance to share that passion with others on a daily basis. This isn’t just a business; it’s a way to connect with and contribute to the community. And seeing our customers return, telling us this is their happy place, that’s the real reward.”
