Wetzel’s Pretzels Twists into Stanford University

Located in the heart of the Stanford campus, the new Wetzel’s location will reside in Tresidder Memorial Union, one of the primary meeting places for students, staff, and guests. Tresidder Memorial Union offers a variety of dining and shopping options, which will now be further enhanced by Wetzel’s Pretzels’ delectable snacks. This new location is the result of Wetzel’s expansion into high-traffic environments, bringing the Stanford community a perfect indulgence for the on-the-go lifestyle, offering a quick and tasty option that fits into a busy routine. The local owners and operators of the location are a father-and-son duo with deep ties to Wetzel’s Pretzels, Varuzh and Harout Abgaryan.

As an experienced franchisee, Varuzh has been with the Wetzel’s brand for 15 years and currently owns eight stores in Northern California. When he first moved to the United States, he started his entrepreneurial journey by opening a medical equipment business and a pharmacy store. When looking for his next career move, Varuzh was drawn to franchising and the Wetzel’s Pretzels business model. When Varuzh got his start with the brand, he opened his first location in his home country of Armenia and then branched out to open more stores in the United States.

For Harout, the Stanford location will be the first unit he operates. From a young age, Harout had a love for Wetzel’s Pretzels, beyond it being his favorite snack. He soon became involved in the family business, starting work at a local Wetzel’s location while still in high school. After college, Harout became more engrained in business with his father, opening a boba shop in 2021. In the future, Harout and Varuzh are both looking to grow with the Wetzel’s brand, including opening locations out of state.

Wetzel’s has been sharing its signature handheld happiness ever since its founding in Pasadena, California in 1994. The brand continues to attract a cult-like following in communities across North America through its cool, SoCal feel and crave-worthy snacks that cultivate special moments of pure pretzel bliss between friends, family, and colleagues.
