Jersey Mike's Subs Franchise Raises Funds for U.S. Army Reserve Readiness Unit at Grand Opening

Owners Celebrate with Free Subs

June 17, 2010 // Franchising.com // Jersey Mike's Subs officially opened its first store in Irvine. Jersey Mike's owners, Dan and Sarah Ciscel, Denise and Keith Meier, and Dave and Debbie Ciscel, know the importance of community relations and celebrated their new ties with the area during their grand opening on June 16, 2010.

To commemorate the event, the new restaurant, located at 16525-G Von Karman Avenue, in the Von Karman Plaza, hosted a 5-day fundraiser from Wed., June 16 through Sun., June 20, with proceeds supporting the Tustin U.S. Army Reserve Center Family Readiness Unit. Anyone who had a fundraising coupon received a free regular size sub with a minimum $1 donation. More than 25,000 coupons were distributed throughout the community.

"I feel that we have an obligation to the men and women who help protect our freedom," said Dan Ciscel. "The Reserve Center houses between 600-700 soldiers. The Reserve Readiness Unit supports troops and their families in various capacities when deployed and returning home. They give so much of their time for us that it only makes sense to give something back to them."

Reaching out to the community is a key component of Jersey Mike's mission. All franchise owners find ways to support their neighbors and employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents as well. "When you are an active contributor in the community it shows," said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike's founder and CEO. "The Ciscel and Meier families are committed to supporting their community. We congratulate them on their second store."

"Three years ago, I was a teacher in Huntington Beach. I would drive up to Camarillo once a week to purchase five giant subs and bring them home for my family," said Ciscel. "I asked the owner of the store when they were going to open one in Huntington Beach. He said, 'why don't you open one.' So two and half years ago, my family and I opened up the first Jersey Mike's Subs in Huntington Beach. Now we are proud to open our second location in Orange County here in Irvine."

Jersey Mike's, a sub sandwich franchise with more than 450 stores open and under development nationwide, has a long history of community involvement and support. Started at the Jersey Shore in 1956, Jersey Mike's serves authentic Northeast-style subs on fresh baked bread - the same recipe it started with over 50 years ago. The company's mission is to bring its customers the highest quality, freshest made sub in the industry and give back to the communities in which it operates.
