Jersey Mike's Subs Raises Funds For Muscular Dystrophy Association At Grand Opening

Owner Celebrates with Free Subs

October 21, 2010 // Franchising.com // Frederick, MD - Jersey Mike's Subs opened its first store in Frederick. Jersey Mike's owner Danny Malamis and general manager Greg Mazzuca know the importance of community relations and celebrated their ties with the area during their grand opening on October 20.

To commemorate the event, the new restaurant, located at 5599 Spectrum Drive, hosted a 5-day fundraiser from Wed., Oct. 20 through Sun., Oct. 24, with proceeds supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Anyone who had a fundraising coupon received a free regular size sub with a minimum $1 donation. More than 10,000 coupons were distributed throughout the community.

"With this grand opening, we will be raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association," said Malamis. MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease") and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. "Typically at grand openings in this area we like to help raise funds for the men and women of our local fire department. However, when we approached the Frederick County Fire Department they asked if we could help them raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We are honored to join them and help out," said Malamis.

Reaching out to the community is a key component of Jersey Mike's mission. All franchise owners find ways to support their neighbors and employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents as well. "When you are an active contributor in the community it shows," said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike's founder and CEO. "Danny and Greg are committed to helping the Frederick community. This will be the third Jersey Mike's Subs that Malamis has opened in the Washington D.C. area in 2010. "As I regionally launch Jersey Mike's Subs restaurants, one of my objectives is to grow the business from within. The focus on training with the possibility of advancement starts on day one. Greg Mazzuca, general manager of our Frederick store, is an outstanding example of this philosophy. Less than a year ago, Greg began his career at Jersey Mike's in Laurel, MD as an hourly employee. He worked hard demonstrating solid leadership and management capabilities from the beginning. I'm proud and excited for Greg to be taking the lead in Frederick – he earned it," said Malamis.
