New Crystal Lake Store to Raise Funds for Local Schools

May 23, 2011 // Franchising.com // Crystal Lake, IL - Jersey Mike's Subs opened its 20th location in the Chicago area, its first in Crystal Lake, on May 18, 2011. Jersey Mike's owner Mark Michalak, 34, knows the importance of community relations and celebrated his new ties with the area during the grand opening.

To commemorate the event, the new restaurant, located at 5006 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake, hosted a 5-day fundraiser from Wed., May 18 through Sun., May 22, with proceeds supporting Immanuel Lutheran School, Hannah Beardsley Middle School, Crystal Lake Central High School and Prairie Ridge High School. Anyone who had a fundraising coupon received a free regular size sub with a minimum $1 contribution. Coupons were distributed throughout the community.

This is the second Jersey Mike's store that Michalak has opened in the last year. He also has a store in Lake in the Hills, which he opened in May of 2010. "Through the store in Lake in the Hills, we have organized successful fundraisers for local schools, Children's Memorial Hospital, the Andrea Lynn Cancer Foundation and Autism Speaks. We feel this is the best way for us to give back to our community," said Michalak. "We are passionate about becoming a partner with the families and organizations in the area and feel privileged to be able to help in a meaningful way."

After stints as a professional soccer player and a medical social worker, Michalak decided to pursue his dream of owning his own business. While living in Cincinnati, Michalak became a loyal customer of Jersey Mike's Subs and he always had it in the back of his mind that someday he would open a Jersey Mike's store near his hometown of Algonquin, Ill. Now he's opened two.

The first Chicago area Jersey Mike's Subs opened in April 2009 in Vernon Hills. In just two years, the East Coast-style sub shop has opened stores in communities such as Gurnee, Schaumburg, Glenview, Elmhurst, Aurora, Tinley Park and Chicago.
