Mr. Rooter of Seattle: How to Make Sure You Are Not a Victim of Bad Contractors

Mr. Rooter has 5 steps every homeowner should know when hiring a contractor.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) October 31, 2011 - With the discovery of the switched sanitary sewer lines and storm sewer lines in the Rainer Vista neighborhood now is a good time to remind homeowners to check and double check work that contractors are doing for them. City inspectors have overlooked some of the most important public safety concerns that are supposed to be addressed by the building inspection process. Here are 5 steps to know when hiring a contractor.

  1. Hire a contractor who has been around a long time and who has good referrals.
  2. Do research on plumbing, electrical, and building codes so you can recognize when shoddy work is being done.
  3. Take pictures of work being done and label items such as sanitary sewer line and storm sewer line. Make sure the connected ends are labeled the same.
  4. Write down any concerns you have in a notebook so that you do not forget to ask the contractor and inspector about your concerns. Don’t be afraid of asking too many questions. A good contractor will want you to be at ease and will take the time to answer your questions.
  5. Always be at the inspection to make sure the inspector looks at all the major points you learned about during your research and so you can ask any other questions you may have.

Remember that even though a home is inspected if the contractor goes out of business it is the homeowner that gets stuck with the cost of repairs. Spending a few hours doing your homework can save you thousands of dollars down the road.
