Mr Rooter Tip Of The Day

When there is debris or iron in your water, homeowners will want a cartridge filer. “A cartridge filter will not replace a full-sized water conditioner,” says Bob Beall, the most referred plumber in the Southwest Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio regions. “If the iron level is not excessive, and you don’t mind changing the filter often, a cartridge filter is a low-cost alternative.”

The three rules for installing a cartridge filter are secure, secure, secure. “The mounting has to be strong enough to resist the pressure of the large wrench you’ll use when you remove the housing to change the filter,” says Mr Rooter. According to Beall, the best and least costly mountging is a combination of angle brackets and U-bolts.

Mr Rooter Tips Of The Day

Tip #1 First, fasten the brackets to the wall close to the service-pipe entry and about 8-inches apart. For concrete or block walls, use masonry screws.

Tip #2 Then, using one of the pre-drilled holes in the brackets, mark and drill a second hole in each bracket at the width of the U-bolt. Be sure the holes are far enough away from the wall to allow room for the filter and filter wrench.

Tip #3 Attach a 3/4-inch nipple to each side of the filter. Use nipples long enough to extend beyond the brackets, generally 6-inch nipples will do. Galvanized nipples can be painted to match the wall, but you can go fancy with brass.

Tip #4 Set the filter body and nipples on the brackets, slide the U-bolts over the nipples into the holes, and tighten the U-bolt nuts.

Tip #5 Attach female fittings to the nipples, using fittings that will interface with the house pipe. The easiest method is to use a universal brass Sharkbite fitting that will interface with copper, PEX, or CPVC.

Tip #6 To be pipe specific, you will have to sweat if you want copper, crimp if you want PEX, and glue if you want CPVC.

Tip #7 To change the filter, turn the bypass valve off, unscrew the housing, replace the filter and housingm and turn the valve back on.

Trade Secret: Picking A Cartridge Filter

Cartridge filters come in different sizes but none come without their pros and cons. Large-diameter filters don’t need changing as often, but replacement filters are often hard to find, and you have to add a ball valve on each side because they don’t come with bypass valves. When possible get a filter that has an off, on, and bypass valve on its head. This valve will prevent water from coming through the filter outlet when you change it. Be sure to buy a filter with metal threads for the nipples.
