HoneyBaked Partners With Feeding America® to Provide More Than 100,000 Meals to the Hungry

Customers urged to join in the fight against hunger by donating at HoneyBaked stores across the nation.

CINCINNATI - Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ - With the season of giving concluded, the season of need has arrived, and millions of low-income families are now choosing between heat and hunger. To help those in need this winter, HoneyBaked has joined with Feeding America®, the nation's leading anti-hunger organization, to donate 100,000 meals.* To officially launch the program, HoneyBaked is donating 4,000 pounds of ham (10,000 immediate meals)** in the Washington, D.C. area, where one in five children is at risk of or experiencing hunger.

From February 27 through March 27, customers are invited to help HoneyBaked reach its goal of providing 100,000 meals*. HoneyBaked stores across the nation will be accepting donations at the register, one hundred percent of which will go to Feeding America®, which at a national level can provide eight meals for every dollar donated.

"While we typically connect charity and hunger with the holiday season, the reality is that hunger is a year-round struggle for many," said Craig Kurz , CEO of HoneyBaked. *** "Following a busy holiday season, we want to invite our customers to help maintain awareness of this continuous need in the communities where we do business."

According to the US Department of Agriculture, in 2011, 50.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, which includes 33.5 million adults and 16.7 million children. Feeding America cites unemployment as a leading predictor of food insecurity. "With heating costs on the rise this year, it is increasingly difficult for families to put food on the table," said Leah Ray , vice president of corporate partnerships at Feeding America. "They often must turn to their local food banks, many of which experience a decline in donations after the new year."
