Denny’s New Hungry for Education Program to Award over $50,000 in Scholarships

America’s Diner partners with leading minority organizations to offer more than $50,000 in scholarships to deserving high school and college students, helping address the issue of hunger in local communities.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - May 23, 2013 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Denny’s, Inc. (NASDAQ: DENN), one of America's largest full-service restaurant chains, is pleased to announce the formation of the Hungry For Education (HFE) scholarship program, now open for qualified student applicants across 12 targeted states within the Denny’s restaurant demographics (CA, FL, GA, IL, NV, SC, TX, NM, NY, CO, AZ, DC). The scholarship competition for high school and college students will award scholarships to deserving candidates that share unique, actionable ideas on ways Denny’s can help end childhood hunger in the student’s local community.

Denny’s has partnered with leading non-profit minority advocacy organizations including LULAC National Educational Services Centers, Inc. (LNESC), Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), Tom Joyner Foundation, U.S. Pan Asian Chamber of Commerce, Urban League of the Upstate, and Rainbow PUSH Coalition, who will each select and administer this year’s winners on behalf of their respective organizations and Denny’s. Qualified students are invited to apply by visiting the Hungry for Education Scholarship site at www.dennyshungryforeducation.com where they can begin the application process. High school and college students will be asked to provide an essay on how Denny’s can help put an end to childhood hunger in their local communities. The deadline for applying is September 15, 2013.

“Denny’s is committed to the fight against childhood hunger and believes our presence across the country offers a unique platform to work together with local communities to develop solutions to address this important issue,” commented Frances Allen, chief marketing officer of Denny’s, Inc. “As part of that effort, the Hungry For Education scholarship program is an important step in raising awareness and developing creative ways to address hunger while at the same time rewarding students who are thinking of ways to solve this problem. We look forward to reading through this year’s essay winners and identifying ways that we can implement positive change to fight hunger in our local communities.”

Upon review of the winning applicants’ essays, Denny’s will select ideas from the pool of winners to put the essay plans into action to make a difference in the local communities, working directly with the student scholarship winners to accelerate the fight against childhood hunger.
