Jersey Mike’s Opens First New York State Location in Manhattan

Free Sub Fundraiser Supports Citymeals-on-Wheels

NEW YORK, N.Y. - July 24, 2013 – Jersey Mike’s Subs, an iconic Jersey Shore institution, is opening its first Manhattan location next week, more than half a century after the company was founded. Known for its fresh sliced/fresh grilled East Coast-style subs, Jersey Mike’s will open on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 80 Maiden Lane at the corner of Gold Street. The opening kicks off a free sub fundraiser through Sunday, August 4 to support Citymeals-on-Wheels, a non-profit organization that provides meals and companionship to homebound elderly New Yorkers. A second location is expected to open at 56th and 3rd Avenue in August.

Jersey Mike’s expects to open more than 100 restaurants nationally this year, with a big push in the Tri-State area. Technomic ranked Jersey Mike’s the 3rd fastest-growing restaurant chain with sales above $200 million. The company was also named one of the top 10 growth companies based on U.S. systemwide sales in the 2013 Nation’s Restaurant News Second 100 ranking and #1 in growth in the sandwich segment.

“Jersey Mike's Subs can be found from coast to coast and now it's time to bring our authentic subs to one of the food capitals of the world: Manhattan. We think New Yorkers are going to love our fresh-sliced meats, cheeses and produce served our signature Mike’s Way™ on fresh-baked bread,” said Peter Cancro, Founder & CEO, who bought the original sub shop when he was age 17, not even old enough to legally use the meat slicer.

Mike’s Way, as many passionate Jersey Mike’s fans crave their subs, is the sub shop’s original way of dressing a sub with onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a signature olive oil blend, red wine vinegar and spices. The company uses only private labeled meats and cheeses that are sliced fresh for each sub sandwich and piled high on in-store baked bread.

“We are dedicated to our customers and want this Jersey Mike’s restaurant to truly feel like a social gathering place that our neighbors want to come visit every day,” said Henry Gallo, Jersey Mike’s Area Director and Franchise Owner.

“Giving...Making a Difference in Someone’s Life” is central to Jersey Mike’s mission. The new Jersey Mike’s restaurant will circulate 23,000 vouchers and business cards throughout the community offering a free regular sub for a minimum $2 contribution to Citymeals-on-Wheels. Since 2010, locations throughout the country have raised nearly $7 million for worthy local charities and distributed more than 500,000 free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes.

Beth Shapiro, Executive Director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, stated, “We are delighted to partner with Jersey Mike’s on the opening of their first location in New York City. Their generosity will help us deliver meals to our frail aged neighbors throughout the city.”

According to Gallo, the Maiden Lane area of the Financial District is seeing a big resurgence residentially and commercially following the economic downturn and Hurricane Sandy. The 3,200 square foot restaurant will employ 35 to 55 team members.

While staying true to its Shore roots, the restaurant will be slightly tailored for an urban feel and offer additional lines to service the lunch rush efficiently. Additionally, the restaurant will feature a greeter or host, who brings the company’s trademark friendly banter to guests. The new location will serve breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner, and in the coming months, add delivery service.

Jersey Mike’s got its start back in 1956 in the seaside town of Point Pleasant and its distinctive subs have since proved popular in communities across the country, including major cities such as Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.
