Sunrise, FL (PRWEB) September 05, 2013 - According to Safe Kids USA, every year more than three million unintentional injuries happen in the home to children under the age of 14. Unintentional home injury is one of the leading causes of death among children, and in honor of Baby Safety Month, Home Helpers of Broward and Palm Beach is educating the local community on providing a safe environment for our children.

Home Helpers of Broward and Palm Beach is educating the community on providing a safe environment for children by offering the following tips:

• Prevent Fire Injuries, Burns and Poisoning – Use childproof medicine bottles and keep all medications on a high shelf. All cleaning products should be stored above head height, out of reach. Sockets that are not in use should always be plugged, and electrical cords should be kept in good condition. Matches, lighters, candles and heat sources should be kept out of sight and out of reach.
• Prevent Choking, Suffocation and Strangulation – Get down on your hands and knees and patrol the home, checking for small objects and other hazards. Keep rooms free of items that can fit in a toilet paper tube. Any openings of more than 3 ½ inches in stair railings, balconies, and furniture should be eliminated. Use cordless window coverings, or cut cords short and tie them out of reach.
• Prevent Serious Falls – Install hardware-mounted gates at the top and bottom of stairways. Stationary play centers are a safer option than walkers with wheels. Hallways and stairways should be kept well-lit and free of clutter. Window guards or stops on windows to prevent them from opening more than 4 inches will avoid serious injuries due to falls.
• Always be Prepared for Emergencies – Learn first aid and CPR in case of an emergency. All emergency numbers should be placed by the phone, including the Poison Control Center’s number.
