ZIPS Dry Cleaners Opens 40th Store, Grows Development Pipeline to More Than 100 Stores
August 14, 2015 // Franchising.com // GREENBELT, Md. – ZIPS Dry Cleaners, an aggressively expanding dry cleaning franchise known for its same-day, one-price business model, has opened its 40th store. The Mid-Atlantic-based chain also recently announced that it has commitments to open more than 100 franchised units throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.
"This is an incredible milestone for our company,” said ZIPS CEO Reid Bechtle. “Our successful business model is revolutionary to the industry and clearly in high demand to today's dry cleaning customer – dry cleaning that is ready for pick-up the same day it's dropped off and all for a flat-rate price. The brand continues to grow as a result, and remains appealing to customers and prospective franchisees alike.”
ZIPS began in the Washington, D.C. area in 2002 when a group of independent dry cleaners banded together. The company was owned by 14 partners until 2013, when JPB Capital of Columbia, Md., bought a large portion of the chain and brought in Bechtle as CEO. Today, ZIPS has 40 stores stretching across Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and is continuing to distinguish itself in the market by charging $2.29 for every garment.
A customer can have any item of clothing dry cleaned for $2.29. It doesn’t matter if the item is a necktie, a wedding dress or a pair of pants, the price is $2.29, almost half the industry average. In addition, garments are cleaned on-site, allowing for same-day service.
“Our goal is to consistently deliver absolute customer satisfaction at a very affordable price point,” said Bechtle. “The fact is that everyone needs dry cleaning in some capacity. The real question customers should ask themselves is, ‘Would I rather pay $50-$60 for ten pieces to be dry cleaned, or $22.90 for the same ten pieces and have it done in one day?’”
To augment the company’s growth, ZIPS is actively seeking multi-unit franchisees interested in joining a brand with almost no competition and “green” field territories. Bechtle estimates there will be as many as 80 ZIPS Dry Cleaners open and operating by the end of 2016. The growth will likely stay on the East Coast, but will push outside of the current footprint in the Mid-Atlantic region.
