Rita’s Italian Ice Area Developer, Joe Dean, Pursues The American Dream To Become His Own Boss

Rita’s Italian Ice Makes for a Lucrative Second-Act Career for Seasoned Businessman

June 12, 2017 // Franchising.com // TREVOSE, P.A. - For many Americans, being your own boss is the definition of the American Dream; such is the case with Rita’s Italian Ice Area Developer, Joe Dean. After more than 30 years of working in corporate America, Dean found freedom and fulfillment through investing in Rita’s Italian Ice. As a seasoned businessman looking for independence, franchising was the perfect second-act career for Dean.

“I was ready to retire from my first career and needed a change. I was spending about 70 percent of my life living out of a suitcase. – it was exhausting,” says Dean. “I had been researching franchising for almost 10 years, and I’m so glad I finally made the leap.”

Dean purchased the Rita’s Italian Ice area development rights for the state of Michigan, forming his corporation, Dean Family Enterprises LLC. Through careful planning and deliberate development, Dean has initiated an aggressive launch plan for the Rita’s brand to grow throughout his territory. He is actively looking for families that share his vision for how to best build out this successful franchise based on an experience that lives up to the corporate motto of Ice, Custard, Happiness.

“Investing in Rita’s was an easy choice for me,” says Dean. “All three of my children were born in Pennsylvania, which is also the birthplace of Rita’s Italian Ice, so we had a connection there. My family and I all love the All-American feel of the Rita’s brand and have such fond memories of enjoying Rita’s Italian Ices on hot, summer afternoons. We are excited to be spreading the Ice, Custard and Happiness throughout Michigan as a family. In fact, in our business plan for our initial locations, I handle the backend of things – payroll, paying bills, bookkeeping, etc. – and my daughter is the general manager and focuses on employees and the customer experience. I love having the opportunity to be my own boss and cultivate a legacy that I can pass on to my family.”

While Dean may be just starting out on his second-act career, he is anything but a newbie. He has years of knowledge to draw upon, gained through his time in corporate America. Dean has the advantage of experience; he is aware of his strengths and weaknesses when it comes to business and can staff his team accordingly.

Since its founding in 1984, Rita’s Italian Ice has been a bright, cheery place where family and friends can come together to indulge in delicious frozen treats. With Italian ices made fresh, on-site daily, Rita’s is known for top-of-the-line customer service and premium desserts.
