It’s also an important development for Stratus Building Solutions, which has been growing in size and stature throughout North America since its founding in 2006.

Before becoming a master franchisor for Stratus Building Solutions, Thompson worked in the advertising world, doing sales, marketing and management for a cable television company and a local ABC TV affiliate, working with small businesses, helping them market themselves. He also worked for an ad agency. In other words, for years, he helped other businesses promote themselves – and along the way, Thompson began thinking that he, too, would love to have his own business.

That said, Thompson didn’t set out looking to become a master franchisor for Stratus Business Solutions, however. Rather, he was simply smart enough to open the door when opportunity knocked. Thompson had put his resume on a job site, thinking he might do something else, and he wound up being approached by a local The Entrepreneur’s Source, part of a national franchise of alternative career coaches. The woman who owned the TES franchise apparently saw his resume, Thompson says.

“They reached out to me and asked if I had so time to chat, and so I did,” Thompson says.
It took about a year and a half of thinking, planning and finally deciding he would become a business owner.

“I probably looked at 20 different opportunities to purchase franchises but this one seemed like the best for me, based on my background and financial goals, and I thought it was exciting to help other folks who might be in the same boat I was, people who wanted to own their own business.”

Thompson is selling franchise territories to prospective franchisees who want to own their own Stratus Building Solutions franchise in the Hampton Roads area, which includes Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

“I’m looking for folks who want to meet their financial goals but aren’t scared of hard work to do it,” Thompson says. “The internet is flooded with the get-rich quick and make-money-in-your-sleep strategies, where people can get something for nothing. A lot of people have that mentality. My children are sometimes guilty of that themselves,” Thompson quips. “But I’m looking for somebody who understands that you get paid for the value that you bring to the marketplace and who wants to roll up their sleeves, build their business and meet their financial goals to help their family.”

Speaking of family, Thompson has been married to his wife, Debbie, for 15 years, and they have a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son.

Thompson also was attracted to the Stratus Building Solutions model because of its eco-friendly practices. He says that he couldn’t be a franchisor to a cleaning companies that wasn’t environmentally responsible.

“It would be hard for me to send out a crew and have them work five days a week, knowing they were working with harmful chemicals. Night after night, year after year – what does that do you to you? That was really important to me, that the employees, not to mention the customers, were not going to be exposing themselves to toxic chemicals day in and day out,” Thompson says.

In any case, Thompson says he is very excited to start working as a master franchisor for Stratus Building Solutions.
