Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream Welcomes New Location at Tempe Marketplace

First 50 guests receive Free Ice Cream For a Year at Grand Opening, Nov. 17

November 08, 2023 // Franchising.com // Tempe, AZ – Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, serving up freshly made ice cream since 1945, is expanding in Arizona under the leadership of experienced franchisees Terry and Jennifer Keenen. A grand opening celebration for the new Tempe Handel’s will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, where the first 50 guests will receive Free Ice Cream for a Year. The festivities start at 11 a.m. at 2000 E. Rio Salado Pkwy at the Tempe Marketplace.

The Tempe Handel’s is led by California natives turned Arizona residents Terry and Jennifer Keenen. The couple will be supported by operating partners Marc Boileau and Chris Zieske. Prior to Handel's, Terry Keenen was a contractor for more than 25 years. In 2014, the Keenens sold their specialty construction business.

“After we sold our construction business, we were looking for another opportunity to be in a business that’s fun and has happy customers. We found that with Handel’s,” said Terry Keenen, Co-owner of the Tempe Marketplace Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. “We love everything about Arizona, even the heat and are looking forward to making Handel’s a household name in Arizona.”

The Tempe Handel’s grand opening will also feature a drawing for lucky guests to win Free Ice Cream. The festivities don’t stop there! On Saturday, November 18, guests can enjoy Buy One, Get One small cake, sugar cone, or dish from noon to 3 p.m. and face painting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Sunday, November 19, Handel’s Tempe will continue to celebrate their grand opening by giving back to Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA). 20% of proceeds from purchases on this day will be donated to TCAA, which works to eliminate poverty and advance equitable communities.

“We love the family nature of the brand, employing both local high school and college students, as well as being a fun place for families to enjoy time together eating great ice cream. The greater Handel’s family, including the parent company and other franchise owners, have become great friends, and we really enjoy spending time with our fellow passionate ice cream entrepreneurs,” said Jennifer Keenen, Co-owner of the Tempe Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream.”

The Keenens joined Handel’s in 2021 In addition to the Tempe location, they also own two Handel’s stores in Scottsdale, AZ and have plans to open another location in Queen Creek, AZ later this year. Operating Partner Chris Zieske is seasoned in the hospitality industry and will be focused on growing the East Valley market for the team.

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream also has three other locations in Arizona, including Gilbert, Peoria, and Surprise.

The new location is a 1,400 sq. ft. walk-up and will feature local and seasonal flavors including Black Cherry, Buckeye, Coffee Chocolate Chip, Graham Central Station, Oree-Dough, Salty Caramel Truffle, and more. The store will offer pickup, delivery, and catering. The Tempe location will be open daily from 11 a.m.–10 p.m.
