"Legends Of Rock" To Light Up The Rings At The 2008 Tim Hortons Brier In Winnipeg

(Monday, February 05, 2007) - The Winnipeg organizing committee for the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier today unveiled its "Legends of Rock" theme and logo to media, as well as announcing full event ticket package prices for the week-long Canadian men's curling championship to be held March 8-16, 2008 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

The Legends of Rock theme is built on three specific cornerstones: hosting Canada's best curlers in Winnipeg in 2008; saluting Manitoba's rich history in curling which accounts for more Brier champions than any other province; and paying homage to Winnipeg's legacy as the birthplace of some of Canada's best rock and roll.

"Winnipeg and the surrounding community is recognized for its roots as the heart of rock and roll in Canada, as well as a region that has produced some of the best curlers in Canada," said Lorne Hamblin, vice-president of business for the local host committee in outlining the local theme for next year's Brier. "We feel the Legends of Rock theme will appeal to young and old alike and attract curling and music fans to the many festivities that will keep Winnipeg rocking the entire week."

Included in the presentation to media was an event theme song – now a tradition for all host cities of the Brier – and the logo that will be associated with this premier Canadian men's curling event. Winnipeg has hosted the Brier five previous times, the last in 1998, and organizers are excited about the potential to showcase curling in the new, downtown MTS Centre where capacity for curling will be about 13,500 seats per draw.

Full event passes, which consist of a single game ticket to each of the 21 draws throughout the week, also get fans into the Keith's Brier Patch and the Purple Heart Lounge located in the Winnipeg Convention Centre within walking distance of the MTS Centre. Full event passes, which go on sale Feb 8th at 10 am CST, are available from a low of $300 for a Bronze full event ticket package up to $550 for a Platinum full event ticket package. Fans looking to get their tickets early can call the Ticketmaster Sports Line at 204-669-3333 or order online at www.ticketmaster.ca.

Don't forget to "Quote your Code"

Details of a unique fundraising opportunity for Manitoba Curling Clubs were also announced Monday. When fans purchase their tickets, they will have the opportunity to designate their ticket purchase to their local club. All 129 Manitoba curling clubs have been given a unique six-digit password code. When you Quote your Code with Ticketmaster, your curling club will be eligible to share in a percentage of the profits allocated to the Manitoba Curling Association as a result of hosting the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier. All participating Manitoba Clubs will share in the revenue generated based on the percentage of total ticket sales dollars "credited to" each club. All funds will be distributed by the MCA following completion of the Brier.

"We are very excited about the potential of the Quote your Code program to generate much-needed revenue for Manitoba Curling Clubs," said Mitchell Tarapasky, Manitoba Curling Association President. "We all know how important funding is in helping to keep Manitoba curling clubs viable. When similar programs have been run in the past, they have generated anywhere from $85,000 to $225,000 for over 100 Manitoba curling clubs. Funding of this level is critical to support and grow the sport of curling at the grassroots level."

Call for Volunteers

Those looking to volunteer at the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier should watch for the official volunteer call expected on February 15, 2007. Local organizers are looking for as many as 1,200 volunteers to assist in making the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier one of the best ever! Volunteers will be encouraged to register online at www timhortonsbrier.ca.

Tim Hortons will be back again in 2008 for their 4th year as title sponsor and Monsanto Canada – a Winnipeg-based agricultural company – will complete its 3rd year as presenting sponsor.

The Brier competition involves 12 teams representing Canada's provinces and territories. The last time the event was held in Winnipeg in 1998 final attendance reached 147,017. Organizers expect the '08 Brier will exceed that number.
