Multi-Unit 50

The annual Multi-Unit 50 list ranks franchise brands based on both the total number of multi-unit franchisees in their system and by the percentage of multi-unit franchisees in their system. The two lists are very different, as some brands prefer single-unit operators and some focus exclusively on multi-unit franchisees.

Everybody loves lists. Whether it's a year-end "best of" list in the entertainment world or a list of business-performance rankings, we see them everywhere. Lists give us insight and a benchmark for all kinds of comparisons. Readers continue to tell us that the lists found in the pages of Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine each issue are informative--and sometimes provocative--and provide a perspective that often allows for self-assessment and operational adjustments.

An industry analyst digging into reams of franchise industry data would find that about half of all franchisees across the country are busy operating more than one unit -- and often, more than one brand. It's a phenomenon that has changed the face of the franchise industry over the last decade. And though there hasn't been much significant change in percentages so far in 2008, it's likely to remain a strong and growing trend.
