Carl's Jr. Goes Retro With New Patty Melt Burger

Fresh Take On a Classic Burger Favorite

August 22, 2007 // Franchising.com // CARPINTERIA, Calif. -- Beginning today, Carl's Jr.(R) goes back to the future with the introduction of its new Patty Melt Burger. The new Patty Melt Burger at Carl's Jr. will be made the old-fashioned way, just like a classic diner-style patty melt, with a charbroiled beef patty that is smothered with grilled onions and melting American cheese, all piled between two slices of real, grilled rye bread.

"While the precise origins of the patty melt are not well documented -- which frustrates hardcore burger fans like me -- it first started springing up on diner menus across America in the 1950's and 60's," said Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Carl's Jr. restaurants. "So, when we set out to develop a great patty melt, we knew we had to make it true to the original taste that made patty melts so popular 'back in the day'. That's why we're using real grilled rye bread, grilled onions and lots of melting cheese, on a charbroiled beef patty. It's a great burger for anyone who loves great burgers."

The new Patty Melt Burger will be sold at participating Carl's Jr. restaurants in single ($2.89), double ($3.89), and Six Dollar Burger ($4.59) varieties. Pricing varies regionally.

Carl's Jr. is celebrating more than 65 years in the quick-service industry. What began as a lone hot dog cart in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1941 is today an international organization that employs nearly 30,000 people worldwide. Carl's Jr. is a wholly owned subsidiary of CKE Restaurants, Inc. (NYSE: CKR) of Carpinteria, Calif.
