Pizza Fusion Boosts Employee Morale with Emphasis on Quality of Life

Organic, eco-friendly restaurant franchise enhances employee morale at corporate headquarters with events, complimentary lunches, extracurricular activities and late passes

October 05, 2007 // Franchising.com // Fort Lauderdale, Fla., – Following suit on their good business practices, the executives of Pizza Fusion (www.pizzafusion.com), America's greenest restaurant concept, are enhancing productivity at their corporate offices by establishing an office culture based on quality of life. From complimentary lunches and late passes to out-of-the-office events, like go-carting on Fridays, Pizza Fusion's corporate offices are everything but corporate and, with an enormous growth rate this year, productivity is only increasing.

Vaughan Lazar, CEO and co-founder of Pizza Fusion, grew up surfing and snowboarding in Rhode Island. A lover of outdoor sports, he competes annually in the World Adult Kickball Association (www.kickball.com) league where, this year, his team took 1st Place at the National Tournament in Boston, Massachusetts. Vaughan brought his love for kickball into the office earlier this year and started a Pizza Fusion kickball team, appropriately named 'Feets O' Fusion.'

"Our motivation in founding Pizza Fusion stemmed from our own personal desires to be a part of a rewarding project that provided us with a better quality of life," Vaughan explains. "We decided from day one that we would always have a workplace culture that was as enriching and exciting as our personal lives. We believe it's made all the difference with a stronger work performance, better morale, and much higher attendance with all our employees or family as we prefer to consider ourselves."

Other examples of their laid back approach to business are giving late passes on the days there's surf, organizing company outings, such as concerts and go-carting, buying lunch for the 'family,' think tank sessions at the Frog and Toad (a local pub) and instituting a jeans and t-shirt dress code. The ambiance of Pizza Fusion's headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida reflects that of their restaurants with hand painted murals and satellite radio broadcasting throughout.

"I never wake up in the morning and dread coming into the office. In fact, most days I look forward to it," Katy Livingston, creative director at Pizza Fusion, explains. "Not only do I get to do what I love for a living but I get the added bonus of working for a socially conscious company that is trying to make the world a better place. That culture definitely transcends into our office. Everyone here is like family. Even on the weekends, we have potluck gatherings and kickball games. We all want to be here, and it's obvious that our business philosophy is what drives us to work hard; not some overbearing boss with strict rules."

Since launching their franchise program in February of this year, Pizza Fusion has taken the lead as America's greenest restaurant concept with an industry leading environmentally sustainable approach to their restaurants' buildout, service and operations. Currently, the company has over 50 franchises opening in seven states, including California, Nevada, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Florida.
