In the Business of Making a Positive Difference in the Lives of Others

January 31, 2008 // Franchising.com // Inches-A-Weigh, founded in 1986 by Scott Simcik, is an innovator in the women's health and fitness industry. Simcik created the concept, which has grown nationwide through a network of dedicated licensors, because he believed the over age 40 baby boomers segment of the population was not seeing long-lasting results and improvement to their health through traditional products and services.

With 60% of Americans considered overweight and 90% of weight loss industry clients consisting of women, Simcik decided he needed to create an effective solution to help women become fit and healthy. Inches-A-Weigh's proprietary program enables clients to lose weight, become toned and fit, and maintain their wellness for years to come, all in a rejuvenating day spa atmosphere. Annual fees are based on each client's individual needs and goals.

Starting a New Life in Arizona

Maureen Becker and her business partner decided their professional backgrounds could work well together if they purchased the right business. Becker owned a physical therapy practice in NYC for 20 years and her business partner owned a hair salon and boutique for 25 years. Their combined medical and retail experience work well with the Inches-A-Weigh business concept. The women saw a lot of opportunity for the concept in Arizona, and purchased a territory in the state 10 months ago.

"Inches-A-Weigh offers a total program. There's simply no other competition because of the nutritional component. In terms of exercise, we offer 2 categories…toning and cardio. We have clients that need to lose 10 pounds and others that currently weigh 400 pounds. It's incredibly rewarding to own this business and show people how to do things the right way and help them to reach their goals," explained Becker.

She continued, "This concept has been around for over 20 years and it truly works! We have people eating real food. We teach them the importance of protein in their diets. It's such a supportive system and our members lose about a pound and a half a week so they keep it off. Also, the nutritional counseling is private and very supportive so our clients, all women, feel comfortable and important."

A Rewarding Business with High Demand

"Obesity is an epidemic. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. There's no better time to own this business and our system is so effective that doctors have become a major referral source for us. We are able to send reports to the referring physician to keep them updated on their patients' progress," said Becker.

Owning a fulfilling business makes all the difference when it comes to being a satisfied and involved business owner. "There's no greater reward than seeing clients lose weight. Even as a partial owner, I've become so involved with clients and their lives. It's very rewarding to be in this business and you also get a little healthier yourself in the process," Becker explained.

She concludes, "We've been in business for 10 months and we currently have 266 members, which is phenomenal. We're thrilled that we chose to purchase an Inches-A-Weigh business and that we could bring this amazing concept to Arizona."
