AD-vantage Promotions Prepares for St. Nick's Day

St. Nicholas Day is coming- Are you ready?

November 05, 2009 // Franchising.com // Caledonia, Wisconsin -- -- When you wake up on the morning of Dec. 6, will there be a Sack full of candy and maybe even a present in it waiting for you? If you answered yes, you're one of the special ones in the Midwest who participate in a tradition known as St. Nick's Day.

Mindy Flynn, an elementary school teacher, said, "I recall children in tears, after discovering many of their classmates had received a visit from St. Nick that morning, only to discover they had been left out," recalling annual examples. "Some kids kept crying, 'Mrs. Flynn, why didn't he stop at our house?' It was at that point my husband and I decided to create more awareness of the tradition by creating a shoe bag, embellished with an image of St. Nicholas and the date so parents would not forget." Bags are available for purchase at www.stnicksday.com .

A quick introduction to the man of the day:

Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of shoe shiners is the figure who evolved into the legend of Santa Claus and is known for his secret gift-giving.

If you trace several of the rituals celebrated in Europe around the birthday of St. Nicholas, you can see how they've evolved into our Americanized and personal celebrations. Many immigrants brought those holiday traditions with them to America.

In the Netherlands, children would anticipate the arrival of St. Nicholas on the night of December 5th by putting their shoes in front of the chimneys in the hopes of waking up to find chocolate or a small toy in their shoe.

In Germany, children would leave a boot outside the front door on the night of December 5th in hopes of it being filled with gifts on Dec. 6 morning.

In America we use a special Shoe Bag called the St. Nick Sack tm that we set outside our bedroom door in hopes that St. Nick will fill it with gifts.

The simplicity and sweetness of St. Nick's day is what we really like about the holiday. Legend is that this tour of footwear is when St. Nicholas would assess whether the child had been naughty or nice. Naughty? Then you'd wake up to a charcoal in your boot , shoe or sack.

Since the main treat on St. Nick's Day is candy, some people consider it similar to Easter in the winter. Along with that candy, the St. Nick Sack is often filled with a small gift like baseball cards, a doll, and foil wrapped chocolate coins.

St. Nick's Day has been a tradition for generations. There are parents and friends sending St. Nick's Day Sacks tm and gifts to adults around the country to continue the tradition and happy feelings that go along with it. If you don't have kids of your own, no problem. Many non-parents decide to continue the practice with nephews, nieces, and godchildren.

Happy St. Nick's Day to you!
