The upscale all-suites hotel brand's Facebook community of over 40,000 followers voted to crown Demma as the biggest die-hard fan, who edged out four other finalists for the top honors. The contest invited consumers around the country to share their most extreme fan moments for the chance to be deemed the ultimate "über fan" and pursue their passion through travel with a $10,000 cash prize, 20 free nights at any Embassy Suites and an iPhone 4 to document the experience.
"I'm thrilled to have the Embassy Suites' Facebook community recognize my over-the-top passion for Harry Potter!" said Demma, an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago. "Getting the opportunity to share my passion with others on Facebook and take it to the next level with such an 'über' grand prize makes all my campaigning for votes extremely rewarding!" Demma's entry detailed how her adoration of the children's book series has shaped various aspects of her life, from studying six years of Latin to learn the meaning of the spells in the Potter books to writing her senior thesis on the parallels between World War II and the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Demma plans to use the prize to take her love for Harry Potter on the road, visiting the recently opened Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ theme park at Universal Orlando Resort®, Florida—a trip she has described as a "muggle's dream come true."
During the month of September, Embassy Suites asked consumers to bring the "fan" back to Facebook by uploading a photo illustrating their most extreme fan moment with an accompanying caption that explained how Embassy Suites' grand prize would help them go from regular fan to über fan. On October 4, the top five finalists were announced to the public with the ultimate selection left in the hands of the Embassy Suites Facebook fans. Each finalist leveraged their social media savvy to ardently campaign for votes online, with Demma beating out avid fans of baseball, The Twilight Saga books and movies and USC Trojans football.
