Starved for Real Vacations, Consumers Would Shave Their Heads and Give Up Air Conditioning to Get Away

Fortunately, Dire Measures Aren't Needed; Wyndham Rewards® Launches Summer Contest, Giving Away Dream Vacation

PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwire - May 19, 2011) - After years of staying home in lieu of a real vacation, a new poll by Wyndham Rewards® finds that 91 percent of Americans are frustrated by staycations and ready to get away. Fortunately for them, Wyndham Rewards® is launching a "Why I Deserve a Summer Vacation" contest, which gives consumers throughout the U.S. and Canada the chance to win the vacation of their dreams.

From May 19th through June 19th, vacation-deprived consumers who submit a photo and describe why they need a vacation will be entered to win the grand prize of enough Wyndham Rewards points for a seven-night getaway at one of over 7,000 hotels and resorts, a seven-night (eight-day) Alamo® car rental certificate and a $7,000 American Express gift card for spending money.

Survey respondents who cited the craziest things they'd do to win an all-expenses paid vacation, including watching C-SPAN for eight straight hours (39 percent), shaving their heads (27 percent) and giving up air conditioning all summer (31 percent), will be relieved to know that they don't have to do any of the three for a shot at the prize.

Grand prize hopefuls have three ways to enter the contest:

In addition to entering, consumers can also choose to rate, comment on and share their favorite "Why I Deserve a Summer Vacation" submissions with family and friends through popular social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Once the entry period ends, a panel of seven travel journalists will narrow the field of responses to the top seven entries. The public will then be the final decision maker on who most deserves the grand prize. Public voting will take place June 23rd through June 29th and is available, along with full contest terms and conditions, at www.wyndhamrewards.com/deserve.

Why a Vacation?

Cubicle Confinement. Work woes are the top reason Americans feel the need to get away this summer (25 percent). If your last vacation photos look a little grungy and you're in clothes from a different decade, yours could be among the one in five (19 percent) families who haven't taken a vacation since "Seinfeld" was on TV.

What to do with the prize?

Summer Siesta or Fiesta? Whether you like to party down, or just lie down on vacation, who to bring is key. Americans aren't leaving their loved ones home alone. Nearly half (48 percent) said they would share the wealth and take their family on the trip of a lifetime. About one in five (18 percent) would take the opportunity for alone-time with their significant other.

Who Most Deserves A Vacation?

When queried about who most deserves a vacation, 47 percent responded that members of the military need a break the most, followed by working mothers (29 percent).

About the Survey

The Wyndham Rewards Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) between April 26th and May 2nd, 2011. For this research, 1,000 interviews were fielded among nationally representative Americans ages 18 years and older using random-digit telephone dialing. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population ages 18+.

For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
