In a recent report, "Teaching Math to the Talented," published in Education Next, American students were significantly outperformed by 33 countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Finland. America's lack of advanced students impacts the country's future economic growth, which inspired Ms. Bisram and Ms. Shah to help students in their after-school enrichment program. More than half of U.S. Kumon students study advanced math, and 24 percent of these students are learning materials two to three years above their grade level.

Prior to opening Kumon of Astoria-South, both Instructors attended Hunter College. There, Ms. Bisram earned a bachelor's degree in English and Language Arts and a master's degree in Math and Science Education. She also holds a teaching certificate in Elementary Education. Ms. Shah earned a bachelor's degree in History Language Arts. In addition, Ms. Bisram and Ms. Shah both worked in a Kumon center for five years. There, they observed how students developed a love of learning in Kumon, as well as discipline, accuracy, mastery, and confidence. These attributes acquired by using the Kumon Method of Learning enabled students to advance above their grade level and get accepted into prestigious schools based on academic excellence. After seeing firsthand how using the Kumon Method of Learning could be beneficial towards a child's daily life, they were inspired to open their own franchise.

Kumon of Astoria-South class hours are: Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students study for approximately thirty minutes per subject at 32-78 48th St. Astoria, New York 11103 and have short assignments to complete at home.
