Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Approves 28 New Grants Worth $337,000

Fast-casual Restaurant Chain Reaches Milestone With $3.5+ Million In Life-saving Tools Donated To Local Heroes

January 10, 2012 // Franchising.com // JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Ringing in the New Year, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation recently announced 28 approved grant requests, valued at $337,000. Since 2005, more than $3.5 million has been allocated to public safety entities in nearly 336 communities. The funding and resources from this round of grants will assist fire departments, police departments and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in 14 states across the country as well Puerto Rico.

With the main goal of providing first responders the proper equipment needed to save lives, items being donated include a police service dog, all terrain vehicles, thermal imaging cameras, fire extinguisher training systems, turnout gear, and extrication equipment which will assist departments in speeding up the extrication process in motor vehicle accidents. In almost all instances, the donated tools would otherwise be unavailable due to city budget constraints.

"Through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation we have made huge strides to improve the life-saving capabilities of public safety entities in communities throughout the United States.," said Robin Peters, executive director of Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. "Many of these departments are under funded and we feel fortunate to be in a position to give back."

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation approves grant allocations on a quarterly basis; the next round of approvals will take place in April 2012.

Each restaurant recycles leftover, five-gallon pickle buckets and sells them to customers for $2. Donation canisters on register counters explain the non-profit's mission and collect spare change, while the round up program allows guests to literally "round up" their bill to the nearest dollar.

In 2005, Firehouse Subs created the non-profit, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, with the mission to provide funding, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities to aid first-responders. Through the non-profit 501(c)(3), they have given more than $3.5 million to hometown heroes, including fire and police departments and EMS organizations.
