Military Veterans Become Entrepreneurs in Private Security

Signal 88 Security was recently named to the G.I. Jobs list of the top 10 percent of the nation's franchises that are doing the most to recruit military veterans.

Omaha, Neb. (PRWEB) June 20, 2012 - Signal 88 Security, Inc., a private security company with more than 70 franchise locations throughout the United States, was recently named to the G.I. Jobs list (link to of the top 10 percent of the nation’s franchises that are doing the most to recruit military veterans.

Veterans who are returning home from active duty are finding success in careers that emphasize teamwork and share some of the skills they acquired while deployed, which is one of the reasons why private security has proven a popular option when transitioning to civilian life.

“Veterans are a great fit for private security because they understand that keeping communities safe involves working together,” said Signal 88 Security CEO Reed Nyffeler. “In our experience, veterans are extremely hard-working and team-oriented, which makes private security a natural next step for their careers.”

As a whole, the private security industry has seen major employment growth among returning troops. According to a late 2011 report from the Bureau of Labor statistics, one in every 10 employed, young male veterans works in the private security industry. In addition, former military personnel are three times more likely to end up in private security than their civilian peers.

And the private security industry is growing , with 6 percent growth projected for 2012 – the highest increase in nine years, according to a 2010 IBISWorld Industry Report on Security Services in the U.S.

Shane Alsup, Signal 88 franchise owner in Indianapolis, Ind., is one example of how current members of the armed services as well as veterans are making the transition into private security by starting their own businesses. Nyfeller estimates that approximately 35 percent of Signal 88’s franchise owners have military experience.

Alsup has been in the U.S. Army for more than 12 years and has been on seven combat tours. He and his brother Travis opened their Signal 88 franchise office in Indianapolis, Ind. in December 2011. In addition to Shane’s experience in the Army, the franchise also employs an officer who is a veteran of the Iraq war.

“We believe strongly in giving opportunity to those who have made sacrifices by serving our country,” said Nyffeler. “We will continue to look at veterans as great prospective franchise owners for the Signal 88 brand.”
