Dunn Bros Coffee Marks 25th Anniversary

Minneapolis-based national coffee company celebrates and continues its legacy of quality, freshness and community.

July 10, 2012 // Franchising.com // MINNEAPOLIS – This year marks a quarter century since Ed and Dan Dunn opened the first Dunn Bros Coffee on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minn. Inspired by Eugene, Ore.’s coffee houses, the store offered quality coffees that were and still are craft-roasted in the shop using an on-site roaster.

“Ed and Dan didn’t want to open up just another coffee shop,” says Chris Eilers, who became Dunn Bros’ first franchisee in 1994 with co-owner Skip Fay before becoming the company’s current Co-CEO. “They wanted to set a new standard for coffee that endures 25 years later as we continue our commitment to quality, freshness and staying rooted in the local community.”

Today stores maintain local ownership through the company’s franchise model, with more than 80 stores in nine states reflecting both the individuals who own them and the communities they serve. The company also is expanding its food offerings through its Provisions Bakery Café brand, which parallels the coffee by freshly baking breads and pastries on site and offering hand crafted sandwiches, salads and even pizza. The first Provisions opened in August 2011 at the 2544 Nicollet Ave. location in Minneapolis, and stores continue to roll out at select locations across thecountry.

“We’re still the no BS brand we were 25 years ago,” says Kim Plahn, president and CFO, Dunn Bros Coffee. “Rather than truck in vacuum-sealed bags of coffee from a central facility, we still source single-origin coffees and custom-roast each varietal in our stores to serve our customers the best tasting coffee at the peak of freshness. No other chain has been able to duplicate this model and that is why we call it the ’Bold Standard’ for quality. Provisions continues this tradition of freshness and authenticity by hand crafting menu items right in front of the customer, unlike frozen or pre-packaged fare found at most coffeehouse chains.”

Dunn Bros plans to celebrate its silver anniversary this month with the following activities:

  • 25th anniversary sweepstakes – Beginning on July 9, customers will have a chance to win one of more than 25,000 prizes by purchasing a hot beverage with a special “peel-and-win” cup sleeve game piece at participating locations. As grand prize, 25 winners will receive free coffee for a year.
  • Facebook contest – Festivities will extend from the store to the Dunn Bros Facebook page, where people have a daily chance to win a $25 Dunn Bros gift card by playing a 25th anniversary trivia game.
  • Jamaica Blue Mountain Anniversary Blend – This limited-time coffee features a complex flavor, medium body and a lingering caramel finish. The blend is comprised of 10 percent Jamaican Blue Mountain, a rich, mellow and very rare coffee, along with 45 percent Mexico Salitral and 45 percent Colombia Manizales.
