Fresh Coat Painters' 'Restoring the Colors' Provides Free Painting Services For Veterans

Greg and Susan Jewell are "Restoring the Colors" for America's veterans through a new program they're offering with their Fresh Coat Painters franchise in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) July 24, 2012 - Fresh Coat Painters is honoring America's veterans one house at a time with the launch of the new "Restoring the Colors" program. After 16 months in business, the couple decided to introduce a program wherein veterans could receive free painting services as a thank you for their service to the nation.

Fresh Coat Painters will introduce "Restoring the Colors" officially this fall when Scottsdale franchise owner Greg Jewell selects a veteran to receive free painting services. Fresh Coat Painters absorbs the costs for all the labor and materials on the project.

Jewell said the idea was born after he and his wife, Susan, were in business about 16 months and were looking for a way to contribute to their community beyond basic charity fundraising.

“We were thinking that once a year we’d give away painting services,” Jewell said. “Once we decided on assistance for veterans, my paint manager suggested the name ‘Restoring the Colors’ because of the tie-in to the military as well as the painting aspect. It makes sense, and it’s something we support.”

The home of Moe and Marilyn Silverman recently got a whole-house facelift when they received the first “Restoring the Colors” donation from Fresh Coat Painters of Scottsdale. The Silvermans’ project would have cost the couple about $3,000.

Everything came together naturally for this first project. Marilyn Silverman knew the Jewells through family ties.

“When Susan told me that her husband owned a painting company, I contacted them to do some work at our house,” Marilyn said. “Our patio covering was coming apart, paint was peeling, and I knew it needed to be fixed quickly. The team did a wonderful job. They were as nice as could be, very polite.”

While there, Greg saw that the entire house needed exterior painting. Susan suggested that they would be ideal candidates for “Restoring the Colors.” Interestingly, after serving in the military, Moe had worked as a union painter in New York before retiring and moving to Arizona in 1991.

“Moe served in World War II and was an MP in Japan during the U.S. occupation right after the war,” Jewell said. “He’s now in his 80s, so even though he spent his career as a professional painter himself, he’s not really financially or physically able to paint a whole house."

The Silvermans will mark their 57th anniversary in August.

“We met after the war,” Marilyn said. “And Moe has a million stories. He worked on lots of jobs, the most famous of which was the 1964 World’s Fair. He and the rest of the team painted everything there. All the wives got to take a tour before it opened. It was amazing.”

For their home, Jewell had a crew of three who painted all the stucco and trim.

“It’s a single-story with various rooflines,” he said. “We also painted the perimeter wall. Moe brought his expertise to the worksite. He was out there inspecting while we worked, and he seemed pleased.”

Jewell plans "Restoring the Colors" to be a once-a-year project with work done around Veterans Day. “Our hope as a company is that people will be applying for the giveaway and that every nominee will be worthy of receiving it."

Jewell's assistance for veterans didn't stop with the Silvermans. He also hired a 26-year-old who had served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and helped him transition back into civilian life. That man has since gone back to school to become an electrician.
