Springfield Huntington Learning Center Partners With Philadelphia Nonprofit ACHIEVEability

SPRINGFIELD, PA - (Marketwire - Dec 3, 2012) - The Huntington Learning Center of Springfield, Pa. has teamed up with Philadelphia nonprofit ACHIEVEability to tutor low-income students in the West Philadelphia area. ACHIEVEability strives to break the cycle of poverty by providing housing, coaching parents on how to provide for their families and nurture their children's development, and requiring program participants to maintain employment and work toward a post-secondary degree.

In October, Huntington kicked off a tutoring program with 40 children of ACHIEVEability participants, ranging in age from kindergarten through 12th grade. Huntington tutors the students four evenings a week at ACHIEVEability's office in Philadelphia.

"We're very excited to build a true partnership with ACHIEVEability, an organization that is truly committed to making this program a success for students," said Tom Murphy, executive director of the Springfield Huntington Learning Center. "The services we are providing are just one piece of what this great organization is making available to the families it helps. They're changing many lives, and now Huntington gets to be a part of it. We feel honored to do so."

Murphy also owns and operates a Huntington Learning Center in Edgemont, Pa. Both learning centers have provided supplemental education services to underperforming school districts in the Philadelphia area since 2002. Huntington was one of the nation's first No Child Left Behind-approved supplemental education services providers.

ACHIEVEability contacted Huntington in the fall to inquire about a partnership. "Huntington Learning Center has a strong reputation for helping kids who need extra school help, and we work with a population that typically does not have the resources to access such help," said Marcus Allen, CEO of ACHIEVEability. "We have engaged tutors before, but none have brought the structure and the evaluation piece that Huntington does. Huntington seemed enamored with our mission and it quickly became apparent to us that they really want to help the underserved students we work with. We saw that authenticity and knew they would benefit our program."

The ACHIEVEability program is the first partnership with a nonprofit for the Springfield center.
