Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) December 11, 2012 - “You must pick a drainpipe diameter large enough to keep the fluid from slowing down (you need at least 2-ft. per second) and to allow air in the pipe at all times,” says Mr Rooter. “Practically speaking, there are four different pipe diameters to work with: 1 1/2 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inch,” says Beall. Mr Rooter recommends staying away from 1 1/4 inch because its small diameter can become easily clogged and fill with water.

Tip #1 Use 1 1/2-inch pipe only for short runs from a single fixture and immediately next to a fixture trap, such as a lavatory or kitchen drain.

Tip #2 Use 2-inch pipe for long horizontal runs to a single fixture (like the kitchen sink) or two fixtures on a single drain line (called a branch).

Tip #3 If the kitchen sink is on an isolated island, use 3-inch pipe. For more than two fixtures on a branch, use 3-inch pipe.

Tip #4 Use 4-inch pipe for the main drain line in the house, typically from the toilet to the septic tank or city sewer line.

Tip #5 You can run 3-inch pipe to a second toilet off the 4-inch line from the first toilet. If you have three toilets, take 4-inch pipe at least all the way to the second toilet.

Trade Secret: “For older houses that use 3-inch pipe as the largest pipe in the house, then that is what you will have to live with. Everything may work fine, but you have a much higher chance of clogs and venting problems, especially if you have more than one toilet on the line,” says Mr Rooter.

The Problem With S Traps

S traps are almost impossible to vent properly. The 3/4 S trap forms a perfect siphon. The problem with S traps is that the waste water may siphon out, causing the trap to lose its liquid seal. Every plumbing fixture, such as sinks, tubs and showers, should have a proper trap. Toilet traps are built into the bowl of the toilet. In older construction, there are thousands of S traps in use. Older building codes did not address this issue. In many cases it may be very difficult to change an S trap to a P trap, which is preferred.
