National Travel Franchise Leverages Innovation to Increase Bookings

Expedia CruiseShipCenters to discuss success at Marketing Sherpa Email Summit 2013

During their annual river cruise promotion, the “Legendary Rivers Sale”, the company’s dedicated marketing team leveraged database segmentation and behavioral analytics to foster one-on-one relationships between targeted email subscribers their personal Vacation Consultant.

“Often sales organizations think that email marketing will sell everything, but in the travel business, it’s really the human interaction and picking up the phone that closes the sale,” said Dave Mossop, Manager of Interactive Marketing for Expedia CruiseShipCenters. “We have built an email marketing program that uses technology to compliment the sales skills of our Vacation Consultants who get to know the needs of their customers and build relationships with them.”

The campaign, which was launched in 2012, aimed at maximizing the Consultant’s time while providing a personal experience for travelers. An email newsletter was sent out to Expedia CruiseShipCenters’ customers that included a video where they could learn more about a river cruise. When a customer clicked a link to watch the video inside, their Consultant received a notification of their interest, prompting them to give the customer a call. As a result of this personal interaction with these targeted customers, a majority of the time, Consultants would book a sale! During the campaign, Expedia CruiseShipCenters experienced an 81 percent increase in bookings for river cruises over the same time the previous year.

On February 21, 2013, Dave Mossop will be presenting the tactics and findings from the campaign at the Marketing Sherpa Email Summit 2013 at Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. Attendees for the breakout session will learn how Expedia CruiseShipCenters has leveraged dynamic personalization, advanced segmentation and behavioral analytics to generate more web traffic and increase leads.
