Now With Three Dozen Sites, Casual Dining/Sports Bar Chain Continues Mid-Atlantic Expansion and Prepares to Open First Northeast Site En Route to Widespread East Coast Presence

March 14, 2013 - The doors officially opened yesterday on a new company-owned location of The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille, the thirty-sixth point on the map for the popular sports-themed casual dining restaurant chain. Located in the White Marsh Mall at 8200 Perry Blvd., the new restaurant includes a 76-seat outdoor patio, a two-floor, 6,300-square-foot interior layout with indoor seating and bar area, and entrances from both the exterior and inside the mall.

“The Greene Turtle is continuing to expand throughout its Mid-Atlantic base,” said Bob Barry, CEO/President of the Edgewater, Md.-based chain, “with franchise sites debuting in Gambrills, Md., and Newark, Del., just after Labor Day and Christmas 2012, respectively, and now this new company-operated location in White Marsh. Next month we’ll mark two milestones, as we open a restaurant that will be our first on Long Island and the first located outside of the Mid-Atlantic region. We’re making sure and steady progress toward our goal of having 150 locations throughout the eastern United States, and as this new site shows, we will continue doing so by opening both company and franchise locations.”

Leveraging its flexible format to take advantage of available locations and expedite the development process, The Greene Turtle took over a space previously occupied by a Ruby Tuesday restaurant. It sits immediately adjacent to one of the main entrances to the mall and on the perimeter of the food court. The patio is covered by a permanent roof fitted with overhead heaters and has three 60-inch flat-screen TVs and its own sound system, which will allow the restaurant to offer outdoor dining for most of the year. With the Mall itself situated right off Interstate 95 just north of the Baltimore beltway, the restaurant is expected to cater both to the retail crowd on-site to shop and to those seeking a destination for watching sports, socializing, or enjoying a meal out with family and friends.

The Greene Turtle is widely popular throughout the East as both a welcoming casual dining restaurant and sports bar and a community-focused business at both the corporate and local levels. In addition to a satisfying selection of traditional comfort foods and regional favorites, each restaurant offers families, sports fans and friends a relaxing environment in which to enjoy a satisfying meal or refreshing beverage, dozens of big-screen TVs overhead broadcasting sporting events, in-booth TVs broadcasting child-friendly programming, and a host of live music and other special events. In addition, The Greene Turtle embraces each community it enters with a variety of on-site and off-site programs, including:

The Greene Turtle “Mug Club”

The “Mug Club” is an exclusive group of patrons (1,000 per restaurant, on average) who have paid a one-time fee to obtain numbered, branded mugs for their exclusive use. The mugs are maintained on-site at the restaurants from which they are purchased and entitle their owners to discounted beverage purchases on every visit. In its first two weeks of operation, The Greene Turtle of Pasadena sold nearly 600 mugs to loyal fans.

Sports Sponsorships

With each new market it enters, The Greene Turtle looks to establish relationships with sports programs at every level, from sponsoring Little League, independent youth and high school teams to forging alliances with major college and professional teams, leveraging its sports theme and building strong brand awareness and a good citizen reputation.

Funds for Friends

Launched in 2005, The Greene Turtle’s Funds for Friends helps individual restaurants build strong, lasting relationships with their local communities. Through the program, local organizations encourage their members and friends to visit the restaurant on a specific day and receive 10 percent of the day's receipts in return. To date, more than $500,000 has been contributed to local organizations. The program has been honored on multiple occasions as a Maryland State Winner of the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Neighbor Award.
