la Madeleine Signs Historic First Development Agreement

West Texas Restaurateurs to Open Three French-Inspired Bakery Cafés

April 01, 2013 // Franchising.com // DALLAS – la Madeleine, the acclaimed French-inspired bakery café, has reached a milestone moment with the signing of its first franchise development agreement.

Enjoying a rich 30-year history with extensive growth to 60-plus locations throughout Texas, the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states, la Madeleine recently launched its strategic franchising initiative to expand with proven restaurant ownership teams in select U.S. markets.

The agreement announced today has been signed with French Twist, LLC, a West Texas restaurant ownership team that has plans to open three locations during the next three years throughout Lubbock, Amarillo and Midland.

“French Twist is just the type of restaurant ownership we envisioned growing la Madeleine with,” said Paul Carolan, chief development officer for Le Duff America, Inc., the Dallas-based parent company of la Madeleine. “la Madeleine has tremendous staying power. The brand has a unique ability to become deeply rooted in the communities it serves. French Twist is the right team to bring la Madeleine to West Texas.”

Buddy Beach is bringing Lubbock’s first la Madeleine to town. The restaurant will be situated at 4406 19th Street. Beach is a serial entrepreneur with a number of endeavors in the West Texas-area. He has finger on the pulse of the community and deep passion for the food service industry.

“It’s clear that la Madeleine customers absolutely love the food and atmosphere. From the get go we’ve been impressed with the loyalty the brand commands,” said Buddy Beach, who also owns and operates three frozen yogurt shops. “It is important for us to be able to attract a wide variety of consumers, casting a net across many generations of consumers – and that’s exactly what la Madeleine offers – a broad base of loyal customers.”

la Madeleine projects the first franchise bakery café in West Texas to open in late-2013.

Plus, three to five additional development projects are anticipated to launch before the end of 2013. Seven new corporate-owned restaurants will open this year in markets such as Austin, Dallas, Houston, Louisiana and Washington D.C.

“I have seen what it takes for a bakery café concept to be a game changer -- to separate itself and rise above the competition. la Madeleine is now part of a rarefied group in fast casual franchising that is on the cusp of extraordinary growth,” said Darren Bothe, senior director of franchise development for la Madeleine. “We have all the confidence in the world that French Twist will represent our brand extremely well throughout West Texas.

Part of la Madeleine’s unique appeal is its operational benefits, including consistent customer traffic throughout the day (14 percent breakfast, 43 percent lunch, 43 percent snack and dinner). la Madeleine’s average unit sales volume is more than $2.1 million (17 percent EBITDA), with a $1.1 million build out, figures that can compete with the segment’s largest brands. la Madeleine has generated positive comp store sales for the last 41 months, and offers a tremendous ground floor opportunity to become part of a brand adored for its food and environment in the restaurant industry’s top-performing fast-casual sector.

The distinctive bakery café brings tastes of the French countryside to America. Freshly prepared, scratch-made quality menu items include specialties such as omelets and crêpes for breakfast, homemade soups, salads, pastas and sandwiches for lunch, and unique dinner entrees, as well as authentic French pastries, breads and snacks.
