California Closets Kicks Off National Decorating Month with New Design Inspiration

Annual Survey Finds Color and Texture Trending in Home Decor while Functionality Impacts Decision Making

BERKELEY, Calif. - April 2, 2013 // PRNewswire // - To kick off National Decorating Month this April, California Closets®, the leader in custom home storage solutions and an authority in design, wants to inspire decorators everywhere to incorporate pops of color and texture in their home to play up their personal style. In fact, according to a recent California Closets survey* of homeowners, 90 percent of respondents said they already incorporate color into their homes and 65 percent said they incorporate texture into their home. While homeowners are looking to add design flair into their decor, the survey also found functionality plays an integral part in the decision making process when purchasing home furniture and accessories.

"The relationship between color and texture along with function is essential to successful home design," said California Closets' Chief Design Officer Ginny Snook Scott . "We now offer design elements that help our clients define their personal style with an expanded design palette, including more contemporary and deep, rustic textured finishes, recycled materials, mirrored and colored glass, textured decorative panels and unique accessories that can add personality and dimension to any room."

Of homeowners surveyed, almost half said they use color in moderation with textiles like pillows, rugs and curtains; while 50 percent said they rely on unique wood grains in tables, finishes and accessories to add texture and drama. While distinctive design elements can personalize decor, color continues to define the mood and feel of a home with:

  • 61 percent of respondents saying bright colors, such as those that are found on the color wheel, suggest a feeling of happiness;
  • 51 percent of respondents saying neutral colors such as white, cream, beige, tan, light grays and other like colors suggest a feeling of luxury;
  • 51 percent of respondents saying subdued colors, such as light yellow, pink, cornflower blue, and other like colors suggest a feeling of calm.

Where luxury and custom design are always high on the list of what's important to homeowners, functionality has the most impact on home design decisions. Whether remodeling or making the most of current square footage, homeowners incorporate functionality in design. For example, more than a third (35%) of respondents said converting a room to a multi-functional space—such as turning a bedroom into a home office or guest room—is something they would do to increase home storage and value. In addition, more than half of respondents (53%) said that having ample closet space is still very important, as compared to less than half of respondents from last year's survey (41%).

California Closets will be tackling color, texture and function in the home throughout the month of April in honor of National Decorating Month. Join in on the discussion and visit us for inspiration on the California Closets Blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
