Led Source Embraces iTunes U, Develops Innovative Ipad Training Course for Franchisees

North America’s First and Only Franchisor of LED Lighting Launches Mobile Training Course for Franchisees

June 19, 2013 // Franchising.com // Wellington, Fla. - It’s back to school for LED Source franchisees. The LED lighting solutions provider, which specializes in design, support, development, project management and financing through its Retrofit, Architectural and Entertainment divisions, recently launched an innovative online training program for its franchise owners through iTunes U. LouMan University – dubbed for the company’s mascot “LouMan,” who also acts as the training program’s professor – was rolled out earlier to educate new franchisees and sales associates on LED lighting products and benefits, while keeping established franchise owners up to date on new information.

“We wanted to develop an effective training program that taught new franchise owners everything they need to know on operating their LED Source franchise,” said Marcel Fairbairn, founder and CEO of LED Source. “LouMan U is one of the first of its kind in the franchise industry and allows us to fully prepare our franchisees through several different customized courses covering everything from introductory materials to selling techniques and product knowledge, and then test them on what they have learned. If we feel the franchisee is not prepared, we make sure they get up to speed through personalized training.”

In today’s struggling economy, franchisors are making sure their franchise owners are fully ready to open for business and maintain success. Oftentimes franchise owners have little experience in the field they are entering, which is what most franchisors prefer.

“We want the ability to start franchisees off on the right track and provide them with all the tools needed to effectively represent our brand,” said Fairbairn. “Industry knowledge is not required to become an LED Source franchisee because we want to be able to train franchise owners to follow our proven systems and become experts in the LED lighting field.”

To get started, new LED Source franchisees will receive an invitation for enrollment through the corporate office. Using the iTunes U app, LouMan U can be downloaded for free and accessed using an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Once enrolled, franchisees are directed to courses designed for entry-level lighting professionals. The curriculum begins with fundamentals in LED lighting, providing basic knowledge they will need as emerging lighting professionals. Each course is a prerequisite to the next. As each course is completed and passing grades are achieved, the content becomes more specialized – from providing directions on how to perform a lighting evaluation to choosing specific focus channels to drive sales. There is even a course on LED lighting rebates and incentives.

Each course includes cliff notes, instructional videos, hyperlinks to articles and other relevant documents that were created by LED Source experts. Ongoing notes can be taken for each course, allowing franchisees to go back and review what they learned. The program also emails franchisees when new courses have been added or updated so he or she can stay up to date in each area of expertise. At the end of each class, the franchisee is required to take a quiz. Corporate keeps an eye on the quiz grades and knows which franchisees have completed each course. If a franchise owner is struggling in a certain area, the corporate team digs deeper and offers personalized training.

“In addition to the five weeks of Fast Track Training that new franchise owners complete after they sign their agreement, we also wanted to provide an ongoing resource center to keep our owners at the top of their game,” said Mike DeGregorio, education and incentive coordinator for LED Source and the head of franchisee training. “LED lighting is rapidly growing field and advancements in technology and new products are consistently hitting the marketplace. To maintain our edge as leading experts in this field, we are constantly updating LouMan U with new information and tutorials available to our franchisees.”

The program also complements a new business owner’s busy schedule by allowing franchisees to take the courses at their leisure.

“We understand how quickly schedules fill up for our franchisees and wanted to be sure to create a training course that respected their time. Mandatory webinars or meetings are not conducive to most franchise owner’s schedules. LouMan U can be accessed at any time of the day from a mobile device,” said DeGregorio.
