Social Entrepreneurship: “the vending machine is just the vehicle”

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 - Fresh Healthy Vending is becoming the franchise opportunity of choice for experienced social entrepreneurs throughout North America. Many of the company’s 200+ franchisees have a strong business background, including Kevin and Christine Wood of Canton, Ohio. The couple became Fresh Healthy Vending franchisees last year when they purchased a total of ten machines. They are located in city and rural schools and gymnastics centers throughout the Canton and Cleveland areas and at the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) east of Akron.

According to Christine Wood, this is not her family’s first foray into a business that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Kevin, who has operated a lighting business for 20 years, took advantage of some extra room in his warehouse to open a fitness-centric venture. “They operate out of a warehouse structure that has some extra space in the back,” Christine said. “It has been turned into a cross-fit training center. With an awareness of weight problems in our family, making it into a workout facility has served us well.”

Despite staying busy with these and other projects, the Woods wanted a business that was different from what they already owned. When the couple started looking for opportunities in September 2012, they knew they didn’t want another brick and mortar business. “We didn’t want a store with employees. So we searched online, and foundFresh Healthy Vending.”

The Woods were assigned a dedicated Community Wellness Advocate through the Fresh Healthy Vending corporate headquarters; there are 23 advocates that represent franchisees in their chosen markets. The advocate compiled a list of potentially successful locations, contacted the decision makers at those sites and shared the merits of offering healthier options to employees, customers and students. Meetings were set up for the Woods to get together with each prospective client, all legal responsibilities were handled by the Community Wellness Advocate for setting up a contract at the location. By November, Kevin and Christine were contracted vendors.

Christine acknowledges that their reasons for choosing Fresh Healthy Vending went beyond a desire for an alternative to brick-and-mortar. “We agreed with the Fresh Healthy Vending philosophy, and the support they provide for franchisees,” she said. “The diversity of the products and the effort towards a better quality of life, along with the message, really spoke to us.” Now, the Woods say their Fresh Healthy Vending franchise is the business they are most excited to share with others. “We are happy to create awareness of the progressive products, and that they can provide a better lifestyle for people,” Christine said. “We’re happy to be part of social entrepreneurship. As we see it, the vending machine is just the vehicle.”
