Huntington Learning Center Offers Academic Skills Training for All Kinds of Students

With Recent Studies Revealing That ADHD Drugs Do Not Improve Academic Outcomes, Huntington Points to a Simple Approach to Helping Students Achieve Long-Term Success

ORADELL, NJ - (Marketwired - Aug 1, 2013) - Learning to concentrate and stay focused on school work can be a challenge for any student, but especially for those with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to an article published in The Wall Street Journal last month, cognitive-enhancing medication such as Ritalin and Adderall may not help such students perform better in school.

The article stated that "a growing body of research finds that in the long run, achievement scores, grade-point averages or the likelihood of repeating a grade generally aren't any different in kids with ADHD who take medication compared with those who don't."

Dr. Raymond Huntington, chairman and founder of Huntington Learning Center, said that Huntington has found success building skills with students with and without ADHD through simple, yet effective methods. "Part of what has made the Huntington method so effective with all types of students is that we customize our approach to each student's needs," said Dr. Huntington. "We work with students on time management, learning to prioritize, setting goals and being organized. We help them understand why homework is important and work on strategies to minimize the fear and anxiety that surrounds school. We also work closely with parents to ensure they know how best to support and encourage their children."

The Wall Street Journal column also explained that researchers are puzzled by the fact that ADHD medication does not enhance classroom performance. While "the medicine may help with focus, it doesn't help with deciding what to focus on, experts say. Rather, it needs to be coupled with skills training, such as learning how to organize or prioritize."

Dr. Huntington shared that no matter what type of difficulty a student may be experiencing, Huntington takes the same straightforward approach. "We believe that all students are capable of learning -- and capable of enjoying learning, too," he said. "That philosophy is at the core of our programs and we give each Huntington student the tools to overcome challenges and succeed in school."
