September 04, 2013 // Franchising.com // Jacksonville, Florida – On July 27, national franchise chain - Woody’s Bar-B-Q - commemorated 33 years of serving up authentic Southern barbecue with the return of its popular Spare Rib Eating Contest. Good times and good food were common themes as carnivorous contestants took part in the barbecue sauce basted bash to see who could devour the most slow-smoked spare ribs within a 5-minute time span. Once the feast had ended, four champions were named and the festivities continued into the afternoon at Woody’s flagship restaurant at 1638 University Boulevard in Jacksonville. Proceeds from the VIP Party – which included live entertainment, raffle for prizes, silent auction, and an appearance by Jacksonville Jaguars mascot, Jaxson De Ville – benefitted local non-profit organization, Healing Hands. Before the party came to a close, Woody’s Bar-B-Q had raised more than $12,000 to support the cause more commonly known as the First Coast Child Protection Team.
“The First Coast Child Protection Team is made up of caring local doctors, nurses and medical professionals who diagnose cases of physical and sexual abuse in children in our area,” explained Yolanda Mills-Mawman, co-founder of Woody’s Bar-B-Q. “The funds we raised will help offset the cost of the organization’s daily operations, as well as support their efforts to raise awareness about the devastating issue of child abuse and neglect in North Florida. This is the most we’ve ever raised on their behalf and we are so grateful to all of the guests in attendance, as well as all of the businesses who took part through the donation of items for the raffle and silent auction.”
The Spare Rib Eating Contest portion of the event was hosted at four locations throughout Florida – where the chain is based. Each winner received a $100 “Q Card” to Woody’s Bar-B-Q and a commemorative “I’m a Total Pig!” t-shirt.
